Job Summary:The Appeals Lead will play a critical role in our Disaster Management Temporary Housing Program, focused on providing support to individuals and families affected by the recent wildfires in Maui. Reporting to the Manager of Eligibility, the Appeals Lead will be responsible for overseeing the appeals process for temporary housing applications, ensuring fairness, accuracy, and compliance with program policies.

- Oversee and manage the appeals process for temporary housing applications
- Review and evaluate appeals submitted by applicants to ensure compliance with program guidelines
- Ensure timely and accurate processing of appeals, maintaining detailed records and documentation
- Make recommendations and decisions on appeal cases, based on thorough analysis and understanding of program policies
- Coordinate with the Eligibility team to clarify application criteria and ensure consistency in decision-making
- Communicate appeal decisions to applicants in a clear, concise, and compassionate manner
- Act as a point of contact for applicants seeking information about the appeals process
- Liaise with other departments and external agencies to facilitate the resolution of complex cases
- Prepare regular reports on the status and outcomes of appeals, identifying trends and areas for improvement
- Provide feedback to the Manager of Eligibility on the effectiveness of the appeals process and suggest enhancements
- Train and support junior staff and volunteers involved in the appeals process
- Develop and update training materials and procedural documentation related to appeals
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex policies and regulations
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse populations
- High level of organization and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
- Compassionate and empathetic approach to dealing with individuals in crisis situations
- Proficiency in using database systems and Microsoft Office Suite
- Bachelor’s degree in public administration, social work, emergency management, or a related field, or equivalent experience
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a related role, preferably in disaster management or housing programs
