ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The Tin Building by Jean-Georges is a sprawling food emporium located inside one of New York’s most historic landmarks. The TIN Building features multiple unique venues: Several full-service restaurants, fast casual, and counter dining outlets as well as 10,000 sf of retail featuring private label products, grab and go, grocery and more. To support this significant operation the Marketplace features a large commissary kitchen and bakery, as well as an exhibition kitchen that will provide media opportunities.

The Howard Hughes Corporation, the nationally recognized real estate company overseeing the re-development of New York City’s Seaport District, envisions the repositioning of the property as a magnet for attracting locals and visitors alike with a unique, year-round blend of entertainment, food, and retail offerings. The centerpiece of the Seaport District’s renaissance is an entirely re-imagined historic TIN Building, featuring a one-of-a-kind Marketplace and entertainment venue operated by renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant General Manager (AGM) – Non-Perishables & Ice Cream is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and performance of the Non-Perishables departments, front end department and the ice cream shop within the Tin Building by Jean-Georges. This role reports directly to the Director of Retail and QSR and plays a key role in delivering exceptional customer service, maintaining a clean and efficient operation, and maximizing profitability.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Team Management:

  • Executes the vision of the TIN Building through service and operational excellence.
  • Oversee daily operations of the Non-Perishables departments and ice cream shop, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
  • Develop, coach, and mentor a team of staff members, ensuring they deliver exceptional customer service and uphold company standards.
  • Conduct performance reviews, address employee concerns, and support recruitment efforts.

Customer Experience & Operations:

  • Implement and maintain high standards for cleanliness, product presentation, and merchandising throughout the assigned areas.
  • Lead by example in providing exceptional customer service, ensuring a welcoming and positive shopping experience.
  • Manage inventory levels, ordering, and receiving for assigned departments.
  • Implement and maintain TIN Building wide systems to ensure high quality of service and overall product quality is maintained.
  • Executes promotional, seasonal, and other designated programs.
  • Maintains an orderly store aesthetic: ensures that only saleable merchandise is placed on the grocery shelves and promptly handles expired or otherwise non-saleable merchandise

Financial Performance & Strategy:

  • Assist the Director of Retail in analyzing financial data and developing strategies for increased sales, profitability, and cost control.
  • Directly responsible for all labor scheduling, working with department managers to balance service excellence and fiscal responsibility.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of monthly inventory counts.

Front end 

  • Manage the Front-End team to ensure seamless customer checkout and cash handling procedures.
  • Handles monetary transactions and performs advanced cashiering duties.
  • Approves voids, employee discounts, returns and exchanges.
  • Processes and settles daily cash and credit transactions for all departments.
  • Processes and prepares shipment of daily cash deposits.
  • Documents and communicates overages, shortages, sales data and technical or price discrepancies, communicating issues to the appropriate managers and departments.
  • Processes and monitors currency orders to ensure that cash is always available for transactions.

Collaboration & Communication:

  • Collaborate with other departments (F&B, Marketing, Facilities) to ensure smooth operations and a cohesive customer experience.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, management, and guests, both verbally and in writing
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Minimum 3 years of successful retail/specialty food management experience in an upscale environment.
  • Proven track record of exceeding customer service goals.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and team-building skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in inventory management, scheduling, and budgeting.
  • Experience with retail technology, Microsoft Office and point-of-sale systems (POS) preferred.
  • Passion for high-quality food products and a commitment to the Tin Building experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and move about the store frequently.
  • Ice cream operation knowledge preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to perform the essential job functions consistent safely and successfully with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards. 
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand for prolong periods of time. 
  • Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly frequent movements from place to place within the store. Bend, lift, carry, reach/extend arms, and hands above shoulder height frequently, or otherwise move in a constantly changing environment.
  • Climbing steps regularly. 

The base pay range for this position is between $80,000.00 - $90,000.00 per annum. The determination of what a specific employee in this job classification is paid depends on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, prior employment history/job-related knowledge, qualifications and skills, etc.
