The Supervisor of Quality Control provides daily quality assurance and food safety leadership ensuring the Company’s food production and packaging facility maintains effective Food Safety/Defense, HACCP, GMP, and USDA/quality process controls, as well as ensuring continued compliance with all Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) certification requirements (SQF Level 2 certification). Duties and responsibilities also include supervising all shift-level QC staff responsible for performing quality inspections, assessments, testing, and approving materials & products to ensure they meet specification, are safe for consumers, while identifying, documenting, and curing process gaps through training and continued process improvement. Additionally, this individual is responsible and accountable for working jointly with other QC Supervisors and QC management to optimize all QC systems, processes, and functions, in support of business growth/scale and sustainability, across all production models. This position reports to the Manager of QC/R&D.

Essential Functions: Key job responsibilities for which the position is held accountable, other duties may also be assigned:

  • Ensures all materials and finished goods belonging to the materials lifecycle (receiving, put-away, transfers, food production, finished goods staging/transfer, etc.) remain in total compliance with all Food Safety/Defense, HACCP, GMP, and USDA requirements (hereafter jointly referred to as “Food Safety”).
  • Supervisory Experience managing QC techs
  • Partners with shift counterpart and QC management to design, develop, and implement effective documentation, SOPs, training, and process control programs in support of root-cause driven analysis & problem-solving methodologies relating to the effective management and the ongoing optimization of all Food Safety and GFSI/SQF Level 2 systems and procedures.
  •  Collaborationwith QC management and cross-functional teams/management to ensure total compliance with all pest control policies, cleaning & sanitation, allergen & cross-contamination controls, date/lot code tracking & traceability, onsite QC lab testing, etc.).
  • Effectively mentors, develops, and motivates all shift-level QC staff by providing the necessary and ongoing guidance to optimize QC/team performance and personal growth.
  • Effectively reviews and resolves product-related issues and/or consumer complaints, while adhering to the Company’s recordkeeping requirements detailing root cause analysis and cures.
  • Meets with cross-functional Company personnel, vendors, clients, and quality representatives (as necessary), as well as other Company leadership to discuss and resolve quality issues at a root-cause level.
  • Partners with shift counterpart and QC management to design, develop, implement, and manage effective Food Safety systems, policies, and procedures to fully optimize QC’s role and functions across all cross-functional models.
  • Regularly accompanies USDA and other officials during all regulatory inspections, while effectively communicating internal policies, and/or root-cause corrective action plans to ensure compliance 
  • Remains current of the latest industry-driven QC practices, standards, technical skills, and regulations associated with food production, Food Safety, and quality control practices, while maintaining a comprehensive understanding of all products manufactured by the Company as well as all raw materials, packaging, and processes required in the in the production process.
  • Partner with shift counterpart and QC management to effectively investigate, document, cure, and report all Food Safety incidents such as ingredient and product contamination, metal detector screening management (identifying any foreign non-food substances),
  • Partner with shift counterpart and QC management to fully leverage all existing/available inhouse technology to further optimize QC’s performance (Microsoft Dynamics NAV, Burrito Sys, RF scanning & iPad devices, other TBD).
  • Effectively support all cross-functional departments and team members when making decisions regarding Food Safety, quality, and integrity of all Company products.
  • Use innovation to identify problem areas relating to quality, and engineer, implement, and manage effective strategic solutions driven by timelines.
  • Provide effective, documented, new team member onboarding, orientation, and guidance relating to all QC and Food Safety needs.
  • Food safety cross-functional training to improve team member knowledge pertaining to Food Safety/Defense, HACCP, GMPs, SQF management and audits, and Quality Assurance.

Management Qualifications & Tools Required for Success:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ QC/Food Safety experience within a food production environment, regulated by USDA, FDA (SQF experience a plus).
  • BS degree in Food Science, Engineering, or related field (similar experience in QA/QC, food production, pharmaceutical, and/or chemical manufacturing will also be considered).
  • Advanced understanding and demonstrated knowledge of FDA and USDA food regulations, GMPs, and HACCP (HACCP certification a plus).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of statistical process control, quality assurance techniques and tools, as well as quality management principles in food, chemical, and/or pharmaceutical manufacturing environments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective and safe manufacturing operations, including product and team member safety, product quality (success rates), and associated cost controls (minimizing downtime and waste, optimizing yield).
  • Effective diagnostic and root-cause-driven problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate and understand complex mathematical equations including basic statistical analysis.
  • Lean Management training/certification or background highly preferred.
  • Extensive attention to detail to quickly identify process gaps/concerns, followed by effective and lasting cures.
  • Superior time management and cross-functional communication skills.
  • Advanced Excel skills (including pivot tables, v-lookups).
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Access).
  • Excellent Bilingual (English/Spanish) communication skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Employee must have the ability to lift 50 lbs. onto waist-high shelves.
  • Employee must have the ability to carry/lift to 10-55 lbs.
  • Frequent bending at waist/knees
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands/fingers.
  • Exposure to a multi-temp, QC-regulated, food production environment.
  • Required to work in refrigerated and frozen environments, near noisy machinery, and confined spaces as part of daily QC and production activities.
