The position is located in Sells, AZ.

Position Summary:

Under limited supervision, provides early childhood development and parent education to parents and guardians of home-based children throughout the Tohono O'odham Nation, where there is no existing center-based program.

The work is normally reviewed upon completion to ensure compliance with general organization/ department goals, policies and procedures. Major work activities are covered by procedures or guidelines permitting flexibility in selecting methods to utilize and procedures to follow, determination of work priorities, and the planning and coordination of projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implements the Head Start Home Base program according to program regulations and guidelines.
  • Provides program orientation, lesson plans, group activities and materials to participating parents.
  • Evaluates program progress; recommends changes to supervisor.
  • Develops family plans with each family according to their needs, building on strengths and interest of the family.
  • Submits required daily, weekly and monthly reports in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Transports parents and children to group sessions, parent meetings and field trips as appropriate.
  • Maintains current and accurate mileage logs.
  • Makes referrals to appropriate agencies as needed or directed by supervisor.
  • Seeks parent involvement activities with individual parent; parent group, and volunteers.
  • Keeps program staff and participants informed through monthly calendars, newsletters, memos, or other various forms of communication.
  • Maintains professional knowledge by attending meetings, conferences and educational workshops.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of Head Start Home Based Program.
  • Knowledge of early childhood development.
  • Knowledge of diet and nutrition guidelines.
  • Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham Nation geography and road locations.
  • Knowledge of CPR and emergency medical procedures
  • Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.
  • Skill in operating various word-processing programs and other office equipment.
  • Skill in administering disciplinary rules to children and resolving situational conflicts among children.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • Ability to have patience and work interactively with children.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
  • Ability to travel within the interior/exterior boundaries of the Tohono O'odham Nation.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or General Education Diploma, and one year work experience in providing an educational lessons to children, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • Must obtain certifications in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid within the first six months after hire.
  • Must obtain a Food Handler's Card within three months after hire.
  • Must satisfy health requirements as defined by the federal program standards.
  • Must be willing to enroll in Child Development Associate (CDA) courses to seek CDA Certification.
  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and National FBI check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
