Toledo Museum of Art is Hiring an Art Instructor (Youth) Near Toledo, OH

Job Title: Art Instructor (Youth)
Department: Education
Reports to: Studio Programs Manager
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Employment Status: Part-Time, Casual
Compensation: $30/teaching hours and $15/prep hours
Anticipated Start Date: End of August 2024
Duration: Fall semester classes begin early September 2024 and run for approximately 10 weeks. There may be potential for renewal for future semesters if all parties agree.

We hope all interested in employment here will strive to elevate our mission and our culture!SummaryThe Art Instructor is an innovative educator, with the ability to facilitate engaging art experiences for youth, teens, adults and/or families. The Art Instructor will facilitate creative, authentic, and project-based lessons and workshops inspired by the TMA collection. Working closely with the Studio Programs Manager, the Art Instructor will inspire people to build their art skills and connect with TMA. Contracts for this position are issued per class each term, dependent upon class enrollment.

Key Accountabilities
  • The Art Instructor performs the following essential duties on-site at TMA.
    • Creates and facilitates lessons for art classes and workshops based upon themes or topics that are inspired by the Museum’s collection, special exhibitions and are responsive to student interests.
    • Prepares and presents gallery and studio activities.
    • Participates in self-reflection, training, and evaluation processes as scheduled.
    • Performs related administrative duties preliminary and/or following studio workshops, including but not limited to submitting lesson plans and supply lists for classes or workshops.
    • As a public benefit corporation, the Museum requires every staff member to act as a visitor advocate at all times. This includes acknowledging visitors and striving to make them feel welcome, comfortable and eager to return.
    • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
RELATIONSHIPS
  • Reports to the Studio Programs Manager.
  • Works closely with the Education Coordinator, Community Outreach Manager, Senior Manager of Education & Programming, visiting artists, instructors, and other Education staff.
Education And Experience
  • Requires high school diploma or equivalent. Has earned or is working toward a degree in Education, Art Education, Studio Art or related field preferred.
  • Requires 1-3 years’ experience teaching, preferably in a museum/gallery setting or community art programs.
  • Knowledgeable of or willing to learn about the Museum’s collections.
Specialized Knowledge, Competencies And Abilities
  • Creative educator with a passion for youth, teen, adult, and/or family art education and demonstrated ability to formulate and implement art making lessons.
  • Familiarity with art materials and contemporary art practices.
  • Willingness to adjust and adapt methods to accommodate emphasis on Museum pedagogy and resources.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to work with people of a wide variety of ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
  • Experience, interest and enthusiasm in working with youth in an art museum, classroom or cultural setting.
  • Reliability and dependability must be able to attend sessions and work flexible hours (weekend and evenings required).
  • Basic computer skills: ability to use internet and e-mail; knowledge of Microsoft Office preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENTPosition requires stamina to facilitate for periods of time. Must be able to communicate verbally. Prepare for workshops and events, which includes moving equipment and supplies as appropriate. May occasionally be exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
