Town of Beaufort is Hiring a Volunteer Fire Fighter Near Live Oak, NC

A volunteer participates in the operations of fire suppression, fire education and prevention, and other incident response operations at the fire station. Volunteers participate as part of a team in the maintenance of facilities, equipment, and apparatus. The volunteer is subject to the hazards associated with incidence response work including working in inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold temperatures, loud noise, vibration, moving parts, high heat, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, wearing respirators, and working in close quarters. The volunteer is also subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision.

Essential Duties and Tasks

Participates in incidence response including firefighting operations, operation of fire apparatus and other equipment as required; responds and participates in remediation activities of chemical spills, hazardous materials, and other related incidents; responds to

Inspects station and equipment for proper appearance and condition; maintains equipment and re-stocks supplies as needed.

Performs maintenance and cleaning of fire apparatus, equipment, station building, and related facilities.

Participates in special projects as required; participates in training, fire pre-planning, fire inspections, fire education and prevention programming, testing of hose, pumpers and hydrants and other related activities.

Participates in a minimum of 36 hours of annual training.

Additional Job Duties

Performs related duties as required.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing.

Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must possess visual acuity to size up the color, volume, and extent of fire involvement at fire scenes, to operate heavy fire apparatus in emergency situations, and to prepare records and reports.

Desirable Education and Experience

Graduation from high school or GED supplemented by completion of courses and seminars in fire service; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid class B North Carolina driver's license.

Ability to obtain possession of NC Firefighter I/ II certification within twelve months. 

Ability to obtain possession of North Carolina EMT first responder certification within twelve months.

Ability to obtain possession of Hazardous Materials I level within twelve months

Volunteer Membership Requirements For Members Living

Outside of Fire District

Those persons wishing to become members of the Beaufort Fire Department and living outside the Central Carteret Fire District, or the Municipal City Limits of the Town of Beaufort shall be allowed and encouraged to apply for membership. The applicants shall meet the same requirements of volunteers living in the district with the following additional requirements.

  1. Must pull a minimum of 16 hours of in-house station time each month. Those hours may be acquired any day of the week or weekend. Nighttime hours shall be subject to the permission of the On-duty Captain.
  2. Hours worked shall not be less than 4-hour increments.
  3. While on duty volunteers shall be subject to the same workload and responsibilities as career staff.
  4. While on duty, volunteers shall be required to meet the same dress requirements as career staff. The department will provide as much clothing as possible as the budget will allow. Volunteers are encouraged to help in providing clothing as well.
  5. While on duty, volunteers shall conduct their selves as career staff do and be subject to the same rules and regulations.
