Town of Chapel Hill is Hiring a Crash Assistance Responder Near Chapel Hill, NC

This position will provide non-emergency services to the community that are essential to motorist and roadway safety; such as vehicle crash investigations involving property damage only, assistance to stranded motorists, traffic direction, and special event assistance.

This position will require the successful completion of a minimum of 125 hours of classroom training specific to traffic crash investigation and department operations; as well as a minimum of 160 hours of field training with a law enforcement officer experienced in conducting traffic crash investigations. This position’s daily duties will include responding to the scene of vehicle crash, traffic hazards, stranded motorists, and disabled or abandoned vehicles; then providing assistance to community members, and completing all state, Town, and Police Department required forms such as a DMV-349.  

This position is entirely community-facing, and you must have excellent communication skills, both verbally and written, as well as interpersonal skills such as active listening, being able to understand and empathize with others, and manage conflict.

This position may be assigned to various shifts, including weekends, and holidays. This is a time-limited position for one year.

  • Investigate traffic crashes; call for proper assistance, including tow wreckers, ambulances, fire department personnel, and law enforcement. 
  • Assist disabled motorists and aid in the removal of abandoned vehicles that obstruct roadways. 
  • Provide traffic direction and control at traffic crash scenes, road closures, inoperative or damaged traffic control devices, and other situations that require manual traffic direction. 
  • Gather evidence such as skid marks, vehicle damage, photographs, and witness statements. 
  • Interview all parties involved in the collision to gather information about the events leading up to the collision.
  • Respond to radio-dispatched assignments. 
  • Monitor community roadways for disabled vehicles, stranded motorists, and traffic hazards; to provide assistance.
  • Supporting the department with special events that require road closures, by transporting and placing traffic safety cones, barricades, light trailers, and other equipment. 
  • During emergency incidents, such as power outages and storm response, support the department with transport of equipment for traffic direction.
  • Report the location and nature of crimes in progress to the communications center without becoming personally involved.
  • Enter and retrieve data on a computer to locate information on wanted subjects and to check license plate or driver's license information. 
  • Maintain assigned vehicles, equipment, and supplies, making sure all are available and properly working.
  • May testify as a witness in court. 
  • Must be able to drive a vehicle independently. 
  • Perform various administrative support duties. 
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications 
Any combination of work experience, education, and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the job. 
 
Experience and Education: 
  • Minimum high school diploma or GED.
  • Work experience with progressively responsible duties in a customer-service, retail, administrative, or professional office setting.
 
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: 
  • Modern police methods and procedures related to vehicle crash investigations 
  • Understand and apply relevant federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and procedures 
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations of the department and Town
  • Understand, interpret, and apply appropriate rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Report writing, record keeping, and interview techniques and procedures 
  • Observe, comprehend, retain, and recall factual information 
  • Prioritize tasks effectively and manage time efficiently in a fast-paced environment 
  • Prepare and maintain clear, accurate, and grammatically correct written reports and files 
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and courteous working relationships with those contacted in the course of work 
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing 
  • Interpersonal skills such as active listening, being able to understand and empathize with others, and manage conflict.
  • Demonstrate adaptability and initiative in handling varied situations and working independently as needed. 
  • Work outside and drive safely during harsh weather conditions, including temperature extremes 
  • Have enough physical strength and dexterity to perform duties such as helping with pushing or removing cars from the flow of traffic 
 
No supervisory responsibilities 
 
Certifications Required 
  • Must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license and ability to maintain insurability. 
 This classification has been designated as Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.The position is driving essential and must conform to the Town's Safe Driving and Accident Policy and procedures.
