The Town of Falmouth is seeking applicants for three Seasonal Harbor Assistant positions to work for our Marine & Environmental Sciences (MES) Department. These positions work up to 40 hours per week during the summer months, and it is preferred that applicants be available to work varied hours during the spring and fall as well.
The primary purpose of the Harbor Assistants is to efficiently run the Town Marina and oversee the operation of Town bulkheads, landings, and other waterways facilities. These positions work under the general direction of the Seasonal Dockmaster and Harbormaster and have constant contact with the general public, marina guests, and slip holders. Duties include maintaining Harbor Master communications throughout all thirteen harbors via the marine radio and internal communications systems, serving as departmental dispatchers for harbor master staff, assisting boaters with lines when docking and departing, and making dockage reservations via the Town computer system for visiting boaters.
Other work includes assisting with the following duties: administration of town dock and mooring regulations; processing new mooring applications; office clerical work; repair of aids to navigation and other departmental equipment; up-keep of bulkheads, docks, floats, and waterlines; and relocation of boats tied to town property, including boat towing. Additional duties include operating the marina boat and occasionally assisting the harbor staff in rescue and complaint calls. These positions are responsible for landscaping and maintaining the marina, including marina restrooms, and cleaning and vacuuming the marina building and offices. The Seasonal Harbor Assistants also operate the pump-out station and boat in the absence of the Pump Out Assistant.
Applicants must be at least 16 years old and have excellent customer service skills when interacting with the general public, marina guests, and slip holders. Applicants should have a working knowledge of departmental functions, waterways, and boats and be familiar with local boating rules and regulations. These positions must also have the ability to handle boats, lines, and marine equipment, as well as problem solve and perform multiple tasks in a stressful environment. Class D driver's license preferred.
The pay for this position is $18.24/hour for the first season of employment.
