What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard position at Town of Queen Creek?
This application is required to be filled out prior to interviewing at the hiring event taking place Saturday, January 25, 2024 from 9am-2pm. Once you have completed the application, if timeslots are still available, you will be offered an on-site interview. After all time slots have been filled, remaining candidates will be reviewed periodically and invited to interview based on the needs of the department. Tentative start date beginning/mid of February.
If you receive a conditional offer and do not yet hold a valid Lifeguard certification, you will be required to complete a Lifeguard Certification course. Prior to participating in the Lifeguard course candidates will be required to complete a swimming assessment which requires swimming four laps (100 yards), tread for 1 minute without the use of your hands, retrieve a brick from 12.5 feet of water.
The Lifeguard Certification course will be provided by the Aquatics team for those with a conditional offer. The certification consists of both online and in-person training. The in-person sessions will take place only after the online portion has been completed.
For candidates with a conditional offer, you must attend and successfully complete the course during one of the following options:
Option 1: February 11th and 13th, 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM, and February 15th, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
(Attendance at all three days is required to complete the certification.)
Option 2: February 20th and 21st, 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM, and February 22nd, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
(Attendance at all three days is required to complete the certification.)

JOB CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY
This is the first level in a broad aquatic series. Incumbents are responsible for providing direct care for clients and the general public in their area of assignment. Specific duties include: ensuring the safety of swimmers, providing general customer service, implementing safety protocols as directed, and responding to emergency situations in aquatic environments.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification is distinguished from the Swim Lesson Instructor (SLI) classification by the incumbents primarily focusing on ensuring the safety of all pool patrons, preventing accidents, and responding to emergencies. Lifeguards are responsible for monitoring aquatic environments, enforcing rules, and performing rescues, whereas Swim Lesson Instructors focus on teaching swimming techniques and providing instruction to individuals or groups. A Lifeguard reports to a Pool Manager and to full-time staff members.ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essential duties may not change, specific work tasks will vary over time depending on the Town’s needs.
- Supervises patrons during all pool programming and respond to level of training for all medical and non-medical emergencies.
- Facilitates events and programming on the pool deck by assisting with setup and breakdown and leading activities when not on supervision duty.
- Prevents injury at the Aquatic Center by supervising pool patrons and enforcing pool rules.
- Maintains daily cleanliness of the pool deck, pool, features, and locker room area.
- Provides customer service to all aquatic complex patrons by answering questions and providing information.
- Completes daily reports.
- Attends all scheduled in-service trainings.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Education and Experience:
- Must be at least 15 years of age.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS (Obtained within 60 days from hire date)
- Current certification in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
- Starguard Elite Lifeguard Certification.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position has been identified as a safety-sensitive position by Human Resources, per State and/or Federal Law. Upon conditional offer of employment, the candidate selected will be required to undergo testing for alcohol and controlled substances within twenty-four (24) hours of the offer.
