Description

The West Springfield Park & Recreation Department seeks a qualified individual to fill the Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead Summer Camp Director position. The Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead Director manages, directs and coordinates S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) specific activities for campers throughout the summer camp day. Leads and inspires campers with skill development, problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration and teamwork with age-appropriate, hands-on projects. Also responsible for supporting the success, safety, and fun of the camp program by collaborating on planning efforts, coordinating the training of leadership and seasonal staff, completing administrative tasks, and providing excellent customer service.
Examples of Duties

-Develop, lead, and actively participate with children in various age-appropriate, hands-on activities.
-Enjoys working with High School and College-aged staff, ability to work with campers (various ages),
and communicate well with parents and guardians.
-Assist in hiring, training and supervision of counselor and support staff.
-Be able to effectively monitor behavior while using appropriate discipline techniques.
-Help to maintain a safe, clean summer program site.
-Ensure a high level of program quality and work to establish a positive relationship with all program participants and their families.
-Capable of managing multiple tasks and stepping into a program and/or administrative tasks.
-Serve as a positive role model to youth, teens and staff.
-Write and implement a weekly schedule for campers and staff.
-Organize and lead staff to facilitate a variety of small and large group activities each week. Activities include science, technology, engineering, arts and math, etc.
-Identify and respond to camper behavior issues.
-Communicate with parents about participants' experiences and report concerns to the Park & Recreation Director.
-Maintain accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.
-Know, enforce, and follow safety guidelines/emergency procedures associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your camper's safety and their whereabouts at all times.
-Render first-aid when necessary in view of the department's policy.
-Arrive to work on time, as scheduled.
-Have full availability for prep work, meetings and trainings prior to camp.
-Must have the ability to lead and participate in indoor and outdoor camp activities which include, but are not limited to, physical games and activities, bending, lifting, walking, standing for long periods of time, swimming, team building initiatives and game and room set up which may include lifting up to 30 pounds.
-Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

-Bachelor's degree required OR Minimum 2 years of experience working with youth in a school or after school setting OR minimum 2 years experience working in a summer camp setting
-Excellent judgment and problem solving skills
-Strong communication and leadership skills
-Candidates must be reliable, flexible and creative
-Must have a valid Driver's License.
-Must hold valid CPR/First Aid Certifications at time of hire
Supplemental Information

Shift: 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday (with occasional pre-camp work required). This position is seasonal (August 7, 2023 through August 18, 2023). Must be available to work the entire 2 weeks of programs and attend orientation on Friday, June 23, 2023.
This position is not eligible for benefits.
