JOB TITLE/DEPARTMENT: Mechanic III

REPORTS TO: Shop Supervisor

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt

PAY GRADE: Aux 9

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Mechanic III-Transportation is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, electronic/engine diagnostics and repairs to District fleet vehicles and equipment to include school buses, white fleet, trailers, light duty equipment, and generators.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • High School graduate or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of four (4) years auto/heavy truck maintenance and repair experience

Ongoing and/or Annual Requirements:

  • Pass and maintain a Texas Department of Public Safety school bus driver physical prior to employment and annually throughout employment
  • Obtain and maintain a CDL class A or B with "P" and "S" endorsements
  • Hold and maintain acceptable driving record (as defined by the Texas Department of Public Safety under the School Bus Driver Penalty Point System) annually throughout employment
  • Pass drug and alcohol testing as required under the federal Department of Transportation drug testing program to include pre-employment, random, post-accident, and all other types of drug and/or alcohol testing included under the program.

Preferred:

  • Minimum five (4 ) years verifiable automotive/heavy-duty truck maintenance and repair experience
  • ASE Master Technician Certification Medium Duty Truck and School Bus

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions
  • Expertise in electronic/engine diagnostics and repairs for fleet vehicles
  • Ability to work irregular hours as needed
  • Ability to drive a school bus safely

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Perform all duties assigned and required of job level Mechanic II, plus assigned duties required of Mechanic III.
  • Work independently to diagnose and perform all levels of vehicle repair to include engine maintenance and overhaul (gas and diesel), transmission, power train, electrical, HVAC, brakes (hydraulic and air), and suspension.
  • Assist Shop Supervisors in implementing shop procedures and policies through example and instruction to others.
  • Demonstrate diagnostic potential on vehicles for the purpose of determining needed repairs and/or replacements while capable of performing these repairs and/or replacements and instructing others in the performance of the same. Including but not limited to, vehicle electrical systems, auto-bus air conditioning, brake systems (air, hydraulic, hydrovac) engine maintenance and overhaul (gas/diesel) automatic and standard transmissions, suspension and drive train components.
  • Perform preventative maintenance checks and analysis.
  • Perform facility cleaning/upkeep tasks to include fueling, trash collection, sweeping, mopping, stocking, etc. as required.
  • Respond to vehicle road calls and vehicle accidents as required/directed.
  • Perform additional “specialty” duties as assigned, including but not limited to, paint and body repair, vehicle tire maintenance and repair, diesel repair, transmission repair, etc.
  • Drive bus routes, in emergency situations, if needed.
  • Participate in annual industry-related professional development as required/directed.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions required the following physical demands: Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts; work in various temperature and weather conditions; and to walk, stand, climb, carry, stoop, bend, kneel, and reach. Work outside and inside, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts. Exposed to dampness and humidity, chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel. Environmental Conditions: Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperature (hot and cold) and vehicle fumes.
