General Summary:

The Teacher Instructional Assistant assists in maintaining appropriate classroom activities under the supervision of the classroom teacher.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher or monitors whole group while teacher works with individual students or small groups.
  2. Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
  3. Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
  4. Helps students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by teacher.
  5. Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.
  6. Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
  7. Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, recess, etc.
  8. Assists teacher with bulletin board and other classroom learning displays up to date as requested
  9. Assists with such large group activities as drill work, reading aloud, and story telling.
  10. Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in other forms of verbal communication with students.
  11. Assists students in the library or media center.
  12. Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and supervises testing and make up work, as assigned by the teacher.
  13. Alerts the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  14. Serves as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
  15. Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students and parents.
  16. Participates in inservice training programs, as assigned.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  1. Minimum education requirement is a high school diploma. Previous college credit, WorkKeys certification or college degree preferred. 
  2. Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students and school
  3. Previous experience working with children.
  4. Ability to care for, supervise, and nurture children.
  5. Ability to follow directions.
  6. Ability to work independently.
  7. Ability to assist with maintaining records of student progress.
  8. Excellent organizational skills.
  9. Ability to resolve conflict.
  10. Dependable, reliable, and protective of sensitive/confidential information.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  1. Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis. 
  2. Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  3. Duties include frequent walking and physical activity, as well as use of hands and arms for signaling and light lifting/carrying. Must have the ability to move about the classroom/building and school property, including bending, pushing/pulling, lifting, twisting, climbing, stooping, or crouching to complete work-related tasks with and without students. 
  4. The ability to listen and effectively orally communicate information and ideas to a diverse population.
  5. Ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
  6. Ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions. 
  7. Ability to work effectively and efficiently.

Environmental Conditions:

Incumbents work in indoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. Duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures, including work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces. Work environment includes working around students, school equipment, and office equipment. 

Work Schedules:

Must be available to report during the school year consistent with the district’s school year calendar.

Background Checks:

The individual selected for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check.
