Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician
Location: Bella Grove Drive
Supervision by: Laboratory Team Lead, Lab Services Coordinator, Laboratory Director
Weekly Hours: FT - 40 hours/week
Primary duties: Will perform moderate-complexity laboratory testing in a fast paced laboratory environment. Will maintain laboratory equipment and perform routine lab procedures, such as preparation of lab media and samples. Will maintain, update and store records; take stock of inventory and supplies, and maintain clean and sanitary work areas. Works primarily autonomously, but subject to change with growth.
Additional duties: Is a lab resource person and provides support to providers, teammates and patients. Assists with lab-related projects and other tasks as needed.
Essential Functions:
1. Performs laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reports and maintains records of patient results.
2. Adheres to laboratory quality control policies and documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance.
3. Follows laboratory policy whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.
4. Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems and/or testing procedures deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
5. Performs quality control and proficiency testing as required by office policy and regulations.
6. Adheres to office, COLA, OSHA and DHEC rules, regulations and policies.
7. Maintains lab supplies: Keeps track of supplies levels and notifies Lab Team Lead when needing to order. Routinely inspects supplies containing expiration dates to assure the valid dates of use and destroys those outdated supplies as required by state licenses, general practices and procedures.
8. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in education programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops. Attends meetings as required.
9. Maintains strictest confidentiality; adheres to all HIPAA guidelines/regulations.
10. Performs other duties as assigned, including tasks related to cross-trained areas or special projects. Assists and supports other areas when needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. High school diploma/GED.
2. One year experience in a medical setting as an MA or lab tech; must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills required to competently perform the duties of this position.
3. BLS Certification
Skills/Experience:
1. Ability to adapt to various work assignments.
2. Possess knowledge of approved medical abbreviations and correct spelling of the English language.
3. Be able to instruct others.
4. Possess good customer service skills and exceptional telephone etiquette.
5. Previous computer experience helpful.
Physical requirements: Prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking. Lifts supplies and equipment. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching.
Working conditions: Frequently exposed to infectious, contagious, or blood borne diseases. May be exposed to hazardous fumes, body fluids and tissues.
