Business Need / Purpose of Role: Under the direction of the Fabrication Supervisor, plan and perform a normal range of welding operations on pump component weldments.
Objectives & Measurement:
- Perform a normal range of SMAW (stick), GMAW (Mig), and GTAW (Tig) welding operations on a variety of pump component weldments such as discharge heads, flanged columns, pump barrels, motor stands, etc.; fabricated jigs and fixtures, plant repairs, and maintenance, and casting repairs. Weld in all positions for structural, mechanical and limited pressure containment requirements. Welds are subjected to sophisticated test and inspection requirements that involve die penetrant, magnetic particle and hydrotesting under commercial and high pressure ratings
- Materials processed include various grades of carbon and alloy steel, aluminum, bronze and cast iron. Equipment used consists of overhead bridge crane, jib boom, suspended automatic welders, plasma and oxy-acetylene torch cutters, universal welding positioners, horizontal pipe rolling fixture, specialized tack welding fixtures, endless band saw, a variety of weld wire in coils, spools, or straight lengths, applicable flux materials and vibratory stress relieving equipment
- Fabricate holding fixtures, as required, with consideration to weldment dimensional tolerances and allowances for spring of material. Interpret drawings and Job Operation Listings to determine fixture and welding requirements. Select welding wire and tips appropriate to work requirement, and set current, amperage, gas pressures and related controls. Set up work on table, floor, stand, positioner, or prescribed fixture. Secure with blocks, clamps and related holding devices to tack and weld in accordance with specifications. Use care to lay a smooth bead, attain proper penetration and fusion, avoid distortion, and dress welds as appropriate. Repair welds after test and inspection, as assigned, in accordance with applicable specifications and procedures
- Proficient in all welding procedures & operations as determined by the supervisor
- Detect and report faulty operation, defective material, questionable drawing requirements and unusual conditions to proper Supervisor. Perform work of acceptable quality requirements
- Maintain a working area in a neat and orderly condition
- Complete time and production reports or enter the prescribed information into a designated data input terminal
- Perform other duties as assigned
Education/Experience:
- Proficient in welding operations
- Must be able to read blueprints
- Knowledge of various welding techniques, including of SMAW (stick), GMAW (Mig), and GTAW (Tig)
- Must be flexible on shifts (day and night)
Mathematical Skills: Basic math.
Reasoning Ability :
Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
Computer Skills: The incumbent should have knowledge of the following software: Basic Computer Knowledge.
Physical Requirements: Sit, walk and stand for eight or more hours. Lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs.
Work Environment: The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. In certain areas of the facility personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required, including safety glasses and steel-toed shoes, and ear plugs.
