Position Summary
Supports students with health concerns and illnesses. Serves as first responder to accidents and health emergencies while maintaining confidentiality as it related to HIPPA regulations.
Duties and Responsibilities
(These duties and responsibilities are judged to be "essential functions" in terms of the Americans With Disabilities Act or ADA)
  • Dispenses and administers prescription and non-prescription medicines for routine and emergency uses as ordered by a physician.
  • May be required to administer medications or perform procedures other than orally.
  • Check blood glucose levels of diabetic students; responds by following diabetic plan provided by physician and parent, which may include injecting insulin. Maintain logs of glucose levels.
  • Maintains records of all medicines, accounts for prescription drugs, insures that medicines are maintained in locked storage, and send notices to parents to pick up medicine at the end of the school year.
  • Administers first aid treatment for cuts, scrapes, bruises, bumps, etc; completes necessary incident reports for injuries occurring during school hours.
  • Assesses condition and provides appropriate health care treatment for other minor illnesses or injuries including providing appropriate treatment for asthmatic students, allergic reactions, etc.
  • Assesses possible contagious disease or illnesses such as lice, pink eye, etc according to district policies and guidelines.
  • Provides health related restroom assistance to students as needed.
  • Maintains the working structure of the school clinic by maintaining supplies, phone lists, records, etc.
  • Participates in health care training programs as necessary.
  • May accompany diabetic and/or wheel chair bound students on field trips to assist them with restrooms, carrying supplies, pushing the wheelchair, boarding and off-boarding the bus, and responding the health concerns.
  • Communicate with community, parents, staff, and students to answer questions, disseminate or explain information.

EducationThis position requires high school diploma or equivalent.
Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations: Required training upon hire is CPR/First Aide, diabetic, bloodborne pathogens, dispensing medication, food allergies, etc. May be required to take additional classes to address students specific needs.
Experience
  • Experience working with children preferred.
  • 6 months or more of related experience preferred.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of school policies and safety regulations, required.
Skills
  • Good oral and written communication skills, required.
  • Basic computer skills, preferred.
Abilities
  • Ability to remain calm during medical emergencies, required.
  • Ability to effectively comprehend and use the knowledge learned in specific training classes, required.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, required.
  • Ability to be caring, understanding, and friendly towards students, required.
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, required.
  • Ability to read and interpret school policies, handbook, prescriptions, and physician care plans, required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and community and those of different cultures, required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds when assisting and lifting students, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen and small numbers.
Work Environment
The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate.
