The mission of Nowell Academy is to ensure that Rhode Island's pregnant, parenting and underserved youth graduate from high school with the knowledge and skills they need to be prepared for success in college, career, and family life. Nowell Academy is relentless about inspiring students through a project-based learning model aligned to competencies. Students at Nowell work to master 21st century skills across all of their courses. We are laser focused in engaging our students in rigorous, relevant and coherent course work.Teachers at Nowell have six weeks of job embedded professional development, weekly common planning time, daily planning periods and weekly 1:1 coaching. Nowell is dedicated to a joyful environment where all staff are respected and have opportunities to participate. We strive to support teaching and learning within our close knit community by initiating discussions and committees that promote understanding, respect and voice. We take pride in building an environment of trust where each individual can feel safe. We are committed to confronting issues of injustice, discrimination, and intolerance. The Nowell Academy Social Worker is willing to work hard to ensure the academic success of all Nowell Academy students. The Social Worker participates as part of the Student Support Team. This team is responsible for reducing/eliminating barriers for students so they can attend school each day and have access to social, emotional and physical support. This position reports to the Supervisor of Health & Wellness. Nowell Academy's social worker is responsible for... ...serving all students SEL needs ...supporting students with DHS, WIC, SNAP, and other benefit paperwork/processes ...serving as Nowell's liaison to DCYF and courts ...supporting students' basic needs with gift cards, food, clothing, etc. ...sustaining partnerships with community based organizations such as Sojourner House, Day One, etc. ...making referrals to outside providers ...providing other supports as needed for student wraparound ...offering counseling to IEP caseload ...offering student support groups (social skills, anger mgmt, life skills, etc.) ...conducting risk assessments and providing crisis intervention supports ...developing and storing appropriate documentation of therapeutic and other student services performed ...implement universal screening for SEL, analyzing data, and creating action plans to address the data ...communicating with families, and health care providers as appropriate, regarding students' mental health, social emotional, and basic needs ...serving as Nowell's homeless liaison, and collect, securely store, and report data as required by RIDE and other agencies ...assisting with the Medicaid Administrative Claiming and time studies process and direct billing of Medicaid-eligible special education services provided by the school, daily case management services ...serving as a member of Nowell's Attendance Team ...serving as a member of Nowell's MTSS Team ...serving as a member of Nowell's Safety & Crisis team Other General Responsibilities include:
  • Fully participate in all surveys providing honest and meaningful feedback (including state, local and donor surveys) as directed by the Nowell team;
  • Create a positive, achievement-oriented culture that enables students to meet high academic standards and achieve excellent outcomes;
  • Support the coordination of arts weeks, capstones, testing, and other student events;
  • Model and uphold positive standards for school culture, including behavior, habits, and attendance;
  • Foster a school climate that supports Nowell's mission, promotes respect and appreciation for all members of the community, including students, staff, and families;
  • Complete all required evaluations and receive satisfactory ratings;
  • Develop strong, productive relationships with students and families;
  • Uphold a positive, powerful presence as a leader and mentor;
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and attend all staff, team, and Nowell community meetings as required;
  • Other duties as required by the Principal and Executive Director to ensure the effective operation of the school. Qualifications preferred: Masters Degree preferred; Bachelors Degree required -5 years of full-time social work experience preferred -full Rhode Island certification or eligibility to receive expert residency or emergency certification -exceptionally strong organizational and problem solving skills The ideal candidate is mission-driven, flexible, creative and passionate about the success of all students at Nowell Academy.
