Responsibilities:
The Electrical Technician is responsible for operating, maintaining, repairing and troubleshooting electrical systems for all power up to and including 230kV including: Site Substations, Service Entry Sections, Electrical switchgear, Panelboards, Transformers, cabling systems, metering circuits, diesel generators, UPS, STS/PDU/RPP as well as motor connections, Motors and electrical controls.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe workplace
  • Must have working knowledge of AC Live Line Work Minimum Approach Distance.
  • Reads and interprets technical repair manuals, operating guides, schematics, wiring diagrams, shop drawings, and codebooks.
  • Performs basic mathematical calculations, including minor algebra, to calculate electrical loads, power factors, horsepower, etc.
  • Prepares and maintains records, reports, parts lists, and work orders.
  • Operates diagnostic test equipment and interprets results.
  • Utilizes a variety of tools associated with electrical distribution systems.
  • Create and perform detailed procedures from simple equipment maintenance to entire system shutdowns including all operations and actions taken. Includes setup and operation of temporary power systems.
  • Perform routine and emergency service on state of the art critical systems.
  • Ensure strict adherence to procedures, policies and regulations for both self and those working at the direction of this role
  • Aid in scheduling and managing vendors and subcontractors during equipment/systems maintenance and service. Perform equipment/system preventive maintenance.
  • Conducts a routine and on-going assessment of the building systems operations. Performs tests, rounds and analyzes data to assure the proper functioning of departmental equipment.
  • Monitors operation of the mechanical / electrical operating equipment.
  • Requires the ability to analyze the operation of various systems, determine the cause of any problems/malfunctions and take corrective action as required.
  • Wire single and three phase motors; Megger single and 3 phase motors, run conduit; pull wiring to machinery, motors, operating parts, etc. assist other trades and operators with major repairs and maintenance of building and equipment.
  • Additional duties based on business needs, including ERT
Knowledge and Personal skills:
  • Knowledge of industry standards, codes and regulations, and the ability to apply to maintenance operation of site Electrical systems.
  • Functional level knowledge of Electrical theory to troubleshoot and repair electrical controls and electrical power distribution systems; complex procedures pertinent to equipment and power distribution and wiring repair; math, including basic algebra, as it relates to 3 phase power systems troubleshooting and repair; test equipment and procedures used in maintenance of process equipment and power distribution systems equipment.
  • The voltage and potential fault energy levels of medium and high voltage wiring systems pose significant safety hazards. In addition to electric shock and arc-flash burn hazards, blunt force and projectile injuries are also possible due to arc-blast hazard. Personnel must always be trained to recognize the particular hazards associated with the specific class of system voltage they will be working with and understand how to mitigate those hazards through safe work practices

Effectively detect and repair defects in the operation of plant electrical equipment and power distribution system equipment in a manner consistent with safety principles and the National Electric Code; utilize and maintain tools and test equipment used in the electrical trades; follow oral and written instructions; deal effectively and courteously with associates and the general public; read and understand technical manuals, electrical code, manufacture guidelines, shop drawings, etc.; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; present an overall professional image; prepare clear and comprehensive reports; effectively welcome and embrace differences among employees and citizens; performs effectively as a member of the team in carrying out the City's stated mission and philosophy; perform the essential functions of the job without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of others.

  • The Electrical Technician must have an appropriate focus on personal, process, and work force safety.

  • Duties will include any and all other directions of supervision that can safely be performed by the candidate.
Experience, Education, and Training:
  • High School Diploma
  • Job grade is dependent upon experience in maintenance, construction, repair and servicing of complex industrial and manufacturing power distribution systems, wiring systems, and motor starters and controls.
  • Must possess and maintain a Journeyman Electrician's License or Master Electrician for higher grade levels.
  • Prefer a Level 1 Thermography certification.
  • Working knowledge of computer applications including Word and Excel and CMMS Programs
  • Valid Drivers License (if Mobile)
  • Higher grade levels Must be trained in grounding and bonding of medium voltage systems and equipment Test Procedures and Requirements for AC cable terminations.
  • Higher grade levels must have an understanding of Common Requirements for Medium/High Voltage Power Switchgear Rated Above 1,000 V as well as NFPA 70E Safety Regulations when Servicing and Maintaining Medium-Voltage Switchgear and Circuit Breakers Rated Above 1,000 V and Voltage Ratings, Insulation Ratings, 100%, 133%, 173% Insulation Levels Shielding Requirements, Electric Fields, Terminating MV Conductors, Orientation of Overhead Lines.
Physical Requirements:
The Electrical Technician may spend extended hours working inside and outside in all weather conditions, and in awkward body positions which can cause physical discomfort and strain.
Required to regularly lift up to 50 lbs and to adjust heavy objects.
Foreseeably the position will come in contact with sharp, hot, and cold equipment, and parts.
Must be medically qualified to wear a personal respirator.
Sensory demands include exposure to the smells associated with industrial chemical operations, exposure to the sounds associated with powered tools and industrial equipment.
Ability to safely climb ladders, and work at elevation from ladders, scaffolding, lifts, roofs, or platforms, and the ability to work in confined spaces.
