Job Title: Special Education Counselor

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Perform assessment and provide counseling services to special education students determined, by Special Education Counseling Evaluation, to meet eligibility criteria for such related service; to complete appropriate paperwork pertaining to students receiving special education counseling services and facilitate communication among administrators, campus counselors, outside agencies, general education teachers, special education teachers, students and parents/guardians.

Work with school staff, students, parents, and community to plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program across the district. Counsel students to fully develop each student's academic, career, personal, and social abilities and address their individual needs.

Qualifications:

Master's Degree

Valid Texas license as a licensed specialist in school psychology granted by the Texas Board of Examiners of Psychologists.

Knowledge/Skills:

1. Select and administer assessments and observations to evaluate students' need for special education counseling services for educational purposes.

2. Knowledge of prevention and intervention strategies, including behavior management interventions.

3. Knowledge of psychosocial development.

4. Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Performance Responsibilities:

1. Select and administer assessments and observations to evaluate the need for special education counseling for educational purposes.

2. Score and interpret data.

3. Conduct group and individual counseling sessions for students evaluated and determined in need of special education counseling services for educational purposes.

4. Consult with school staff regarding implementation of accommodations in a classroom setting.

5. Consult with staff and parents concerning the educational needs of students including interpretation of assessment data.

6. Consult with psychologists, psychiatrists, medical doctors, and community agencies concerning intellectual, emotional, and behavioral functioning of students.

7. Develop, coordinate, and maintain special-education counseling program and make changes as needed.

8. Select and administer formal and informal assessments to determine student eligibility for special education counseling services.

9. Compile and maintain records and documents as needed.

10. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of education rule, and local board policy concerning psychological services, assessment, placement, and planning for special education services.

11. Comply with all district and local campus rules, regulations, and routines.

12. Participate in professional development to improve skills related to current job assignment.

13. Demonstrate punctuality, good attendance, and work ethic for all duties.

Ability to maintain emotional control under work-related stress; ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); ability to provide instruction to students, staff, and parents. Frequent district-wide travel; occasional out of district travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
