Tuscaloosa City Schools is Hiring a Mental Health Registered Nurse (Children's Center) Near Tuscaloosa, AL

Mental Health Registered Nurse

Job Goal
Responsible for planning and providing mental health support and nursing care to students who
have a range of mental health issues.

Qualifications
1. Possess a current license from Alabama Board of Nursing designating Registered Nurse;
2. Current CPR card;
3. Two (2) years’ experience in hospital, community health or clinical setting preferred;
4. Valid driver's license and the ability to have access to appropriate transportation to meet
job requirements;
5. Must meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the
Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457;
6. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Knowledge of Board policies and procedures..
2. Effective written and oral communication skills.
3. Knowledge of current general medical and pediatric nursing practices.
4. Skilled in the use of testing and measurements for assessing vision, and other appropriate
health screening activities and programs. (i.e.: Immunization Audits)
5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents
and school faculties.
6. Ability to use and implement computer technology programs including Microsoft Office,
Excel, Google and email.
7. Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as
needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.
8. Knowledge of medications: medical purpose for usage, administration details, possible
complications, side effects, interactions.
9. Knowledge of physiological responses to medical illnesses and treatment and psychiatric
illnesses and treatment.
10. Knowledge of mental illness diagnoses and substance use disorders and appropriate
levels of treatment.

Essential Functions
1. Provide nursing care for students.
2. Maintain proper and accurate and timely documentation.
3. Contact principal and supervising RN regarding crisis situations in the school. This
includes child abuse, threatened suicide and accidents.
4. Assist students with medications according to approved procedures.
5. Administer first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
6. Adhere to rules and regulations.
7. Perform/ Assist with screening programs and school programs. (Spinal Screening, Vision
Screening and Immunization Audit).
8. Complete Alabama State Department of Education required training.
9. Assist with or independently complete annual training for employees.
10. Compose and follow written Individual Health Care Plan(s) and/or Emergency Action
Plan(s). Maintain and review health plans to all personnel with a “need to know”.
11. Perform AED maintenance and monitoring.
12. Assist or complete SERT (School Emergency Response Team) drills.
13. Participate in school-based meetings regarding health and wellness of students (IEP/504
meetings) as needed.
14. Review and complete the state-required immunization survey for student immunization
records and communicate with school administrators and students’ guardians regarding
any deficiencies, according to state laws and regulations.
15. Act as a liaison between the school district, students’ families, and medical professionals.
16. Follow the Alabama Board of Nursing Standards of Nursing Practice Chapter 610-X-6
17. Take leave in accordance with Board policy and report all absences to the district’s
absence management system.
18. Report to work on time and regularly as designated by work schedule.
19. Assume other reasonable and equitable job-related duties assigned.
20. Build relationships with students.
21. Administer medication and treatments.
22. Monitor students' conditions to ensure they follow the treatment plan the team has
prescribed.
23. Deal with specific symptoms that can accompany mental health conditions, such as
behavioral issues and personality changes.
24. De-escalate challenging situations for students to maintain a protective environment.
25. Host group or one-on-one therapy sessions.
26. Communicate with students' families about treatment progress, diagnoses and recovery
plans.
27. Collaborate and communicate with doctors, nurses and psychiatrists to fulfill student
treatment plans.

Terms of Employment
The terms of employment shall be in accordance with provisions of the Board’s Policy Manual,
Students First Act and the Board’s Salary Schedule – Registered Nurse. This is a 207 (10
months) Day Contract.

Evaluation
Performance evaluation shall be in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on
Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
