Role and Responsibilities
The mosquito control technician assists in the operation of Tuscarawas County Mosquito Control Program and must display initiative and follow through in completing tasks; be reliable, mature and adaptable; relate successfully with the community and co-workers regardless of their social, ethnic, or religious status; comply with agency objectives, philosophy and policies. The majority of this work occurs in an outdoor setting.
Experience and Education Requirements
This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Ability to drive a full size pickup truck. Basic map reading skills. Ability to read and understand written instructions, to add and subtract whole numbers. Ability to understand the safe handling of pesticides and keep accurate records. Must have an understanding of basic biology or science, and you must be capable of responding to questions or concerns from the general public. Preferred Qualifications include: College or university science/health majors preferred, or a teacher/educator or retiree with a strong science background preferred. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access).
Essential duties
1. Investigating mosquito complaints in assigned area.
2. Informing residents of steps for mosquito abatement.
3. Collecting or trapping mosquito larvae and/or adults if needed.
4. Applying pesticides to mosquito larvae when found.
5. Assisting with special larvicide applications as needed (ditches, package plants, catch-basins, etc).
6. Assisting with special adulticide applications as needed (parks, special events, tire piles, etc).
7. Performing evening adulticiding treatments if needed.
8. Maintaining accurate records and ability to read maps.
9. Maintaining and storing equipment responsibly.
10. Completing other mosquito control related tasks as needed.
11. Performs customer service duties in the issuing and processing of vital records; interprets state, county, and departmental polices, rules, and regulations in response to inquiries.
12. Collects and processes fees, issues receipts, run daily reports, and balances daily pay-in fee amounts Performs.
13. Maintains cooperative working relationships among public and agency participants.
14. Attends staff meetings and serves on temporary committees, as requested and is required to be punctual at such meetings.
15. Performs additional duties and assignments, as requested by Department Director and/or Health Commissioner.
