Low level micro-controllers, which communicated directly with hardware, and live locked away in electrical cabinets, make it very challenging to improve robot systems continuously via software. And provide very little visibility and operational analytics to the end user. For reference, a $250 3D printer comes with a cloud platform for visibility, control, software improvements, and operational metrics that is leaps and bounds better than a $250,000 robot workcell.
Tutor wants you to help us change that.
Tutor builds hardware and writes software - just like any other automation provider. But Tutor takes a very different approach to the role of software in automation.
We develop abstractions over hardware to allow for software-defined applications, allowing us to move really quickly to develop novel applications and and continuously improve existing ones. Our robots are web-enabled, allowing us to utilize powerful compute resources and GPUs on the cloud, versus the low-level controllers of today’s automation system. We operate robots as a fleet - managing them via live & transparent sensor feeds and operational metrics, which our customers can use to improve their day to day workflows to maximize efficiency. And we create a low-level layer, where the tools of today’s automation remain first-class citizens and allow us to swim in the sea of the machines, sensors, and controllers that exist around our robots.
And this gives us some pretty interesting problems to work with.
