Job Description: Job Title: Medical Assistant General Summary of Duties: To provide support to physicians and non-physician providers through patient care, clerical, environmental and organizational tasks. Performs tasks as directed by Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Site Managers, and/or Registered Nurses. Supervision Received: Nurse Manager Supervision Exercised: NONE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned which may include organizing patient flow according to schedules; accompanying patients to exam room; assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam; taking vital signs, updating medication list, obtaining pertinent data to relay to physician; assisting physicians/nurses with various procedures; documentation in medical record; relaying instructions to patients/families; assisting with telephone calls; and monitoring prescription line. Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include: receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.; scheduling follow-up appointments; scheduling ancillary testing appointments completing forms/requisitions as needed. Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned which may include: cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; restocking exam/procedure rooms. Fulfills organizational responsibilities as assigned which may include: respecting/promoting patient rights and confidentiality; responding appropriately to emergencies; reporting problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisors quickly. Adhere to internal practice processes with regard to computerized scheduling and electronic medical record/data base. Cooperate with the integration of all services including front office, lab, pharmacy, nursing, and other practice sites to meet patient needs. Participate in annual OSHA training sessions to maintain practice compliance with safety standards. Participate with other team members in clinic and practice activities to foster communication and continuing quality patient care. All other duties as assigned. EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED equivalent and Medical Assistant Certification. EXPERIENCE: 0-2 years of work experience in chemotherapy preferred. Familiar with standard concepts, practices and procedures within oncology practice. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. REQUIREMENTS: Maintains CPR certification and current Texas Medical Assistant Certification. KNOWLEDGE: 1. Knowledge of health care field and medical specialty. 2. Knowledge of specific assisting tasks related to particular medical specialty. 3. Knowledge of information that must be conveyed to patients and families. SKILLS: 1. Skill in performing tasks appropriately. 2. Skill intact and diplomacy in interpersonal interactions. 3. Skill in understanding of patient education needs by effectively sharing information with patients and families. ABILITIES: 1. Ability to perform a variety of tasks. 2. Ability to demonstrate compassion and caring in dealing with others. ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS: Combination of medical office and exam/procedure room settings. Well-lighted, well-ventilated, adequate space. Exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions common to clinic setting. PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics techniques when making necessary patient transfers and helping patients with walking, dressing, etc. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds of supplies.
