Summary
This position is located in the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), Director's Office. This position serves as the chief of staff to the BJA Director, to include coordinating the Director's schedule and activities, promoting achievement of the Bureau's goals, and representing the Director in meetings.

Duties
Serves as Chief of Staff for the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) reporting to BJA Director, providing counsel and support on key decisions and initiatives, and prioritizes the Director's event schedule, including engagements, meetings, and events
Has a significant role in developing, coordinating, and executing BJA's strategic priorities and initiatives, ensuring alignment with the overall vision and goals of the Director.
Identifies opportunities for the Director to evaluate and engage with exemplary work in the field.
Works with BJA senior leadership to create and maintain a running list of programs, leaders, and organizations to incorporate into site visits.
Manages the Director's speechwriting process. Works with BJA Deputy Directors, Associate Directors, and staff to ensure the timely development of talking points and speeches that are appropriate for the audience and reflect BJA's most current data and programmatic information.
Proactively manages a schedule for regular meetings with external stakeholder organizations to maintain effective communication and foster relationships and is responsible for broader stakeholder briefings on BJA initiatives.
Provides guidance on the most challenging problems facing the agency having responsibility for a criminal justice program of national scope and impact, such as justifying or settling matters involving a significant and controversial program policy.

Qualifications
Specialized Experience:
Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the 14 level. Specialized experience is experience which is in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Examples of specialized experience include:
Providing expert recommendations on complex criminal justice related programs, issues, or problems;
Representing an executive or local leader/head of a government body at internal and external engagements related to criminal justice programs, issues, or problems;
Serving as a strategic advisor to executive leadership, providing counsel and support on decisions and initiatives related to criminal justice programs, issues, or problems; AND/OR
Completing high priority special projects, studies, and/or initiatives involving complex, critical, or sensitive criminal justice related issues.
Technical Qualifications:
Applicants who meet the basic entry and minimum qualification requirements, as described above, will be further evaluated on the following technical qualifications:
Analytical Thinker: Uses data to extrapolate possible outcomes, evaluating effects on policy and procedures. Capable of complex problem solving.
Knowledge of criminal justice practice and policy: Understands and appropriately applies principles, procedures, requirements, regulations, and policies related to specialized expertise.
Oral Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
Written Communication: Uses correct English grammar, punctuation, and spelling to communicate thoughts, ideas, information, and messages in writing.

This position has a duty station of Washington, D.C. The selectee will be required to physically report to the OJP office building at least four (4) days per bi-weekly pay period and may incorporate leave and official travel plans into this reporting requirement. The office director or supervisor may request the selectee's presence in the office more frequently, as determined by the needs of the office. The selectee will be responsible for covering all commuting-related travel expenses. OJP employees are eligible for one transportation benefit - parking or the Department of Justice (DOJ) transit subsidy.
