Duties

Incumbent inspects and repairs historic steam and diesel locomotives and historic railroad cars to applicable standards.

Troubleshoot cause of mechanical problems and make necessary operational repairs. Incumbent understands the makeup and operation of the various individual systems maintained and their interrelationships.

Ensures compliance with NPS 28, 29 / 49 CFR, and AAR standards where applicable.

  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males
  • Direct Deposit : Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Drug Testing : You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment.

In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

  • Driver's License : Required to possess a valid State Driver's License.
  • Uniform : You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Work Schedule : You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Probationary Period : If youare a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • License / Certification : You must possess and maintain a current Asbestos certificate and Lead Abatement certificate within 6 months of being employed.
  • Travel : You may be required to travel overnight away from 1 to 3 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card : You may be required to complete training and obtain / maintain a government charge card with travel and / or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and : (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school;

or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or

c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education;

or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors :

  • Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT)
  • Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprints reading)
  • Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  • Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc.
  • Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic)
  • Trouble shooting
  • Use of Measuring Instructions

The ability to perform the most difficult and complex tasks of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Repairer, WG-08 without normal supervision.

Work includes : diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and modifying complex vehicles, boats, equipment and systems; having a thorough knowledge of diagnostic equipment, and experience applying to independent judgment in testing, inspecting, and evaluating the work performed on heavy vehicles, boats, equipment and systems.

I require minimal supervision to perform these tasks to meet acceptable trade standards and am consulted by other mechanics in difficult situations.
