Duties
As a Chemist (Senior Material Scientist -Interdisciplinary), You Will:
  • Lead, plan, conduct, monitor, assess and evaluate investigations and studies to validate material compliance to specifications and requirements, to identify the material key characteristics or properties, establish technical requirements and specifications, and identify and resolve critical, complex, or novel material performance or quality issues related to the production, quality, durability, and security of U.S Currency and other BEP security products.
  • Define research methodology and formulate analytical models for material behavior and performance, including development of testing and verification methods.
  • Conduct practical trials of potential new or modified materials, following established Change Control protocols and make presentations of their work to internal and external stakeholders, including Executives.
  • Provide technical support, planning and leading special studies and investigations, for production problems or issues that arise concerning assigned materials, and provide timely updates and report, as appropriate, of the status of the problem, including recommendation for resolution.
  • Serve as Alternate/Subordinate Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) for raw materials and services related to raw materials manufacture and inspection.

QualificationsYou must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized Experience for the GS-13: Specialized experience is one year of experience at the GS-12 level or equivalent in other public or private sectors, that is directly related to the position as listed in this announcement and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience includes:
  • Completing project-based assignments relating to production and operational needs such as validating material compliance.; AND
  • Analyzing and interpreting data to assist in providing technical support.; AND
  • Reviewing and writing technical reports to present findings to senior leadership and/or external stakeholders.
Specialized Experience for the GS-12: Specialized experience is one year of experience at the GS-11 level or equivalent in other public or private sectors, that is directly related to the position as listed in this announcement and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience includes:
  • Assisting with project-based assignments relating to production and/or operational needs such as validating material compliance.; AND
  • Reviewing data to assist senior chemists and/or physical scientists in providing technical support.; AND
  • Reviewing technical reports for accuracy.
Education
Basic Requirements:Individual Occupational Requirements for the Physical Scientist:
  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
  • Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Basic Requirements:Individual Occupational Requirements for the Chemist:
  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
  • Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Education Requirements: The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. If you are qualifying based on foreign education, you must submit proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency. Refer to the OPM instructions.

  • The facility typically shuts down annually between Christmas and New Year's Day. As such, all BEP employees must take leave for workdays during the shutdown period.
