Duties
  • Prepares and Reviews retirement packets, applications and correspondence before submission to federal agencies.
  • Reviews documents and reports for completeness and enters pertinent information into an automated tracking system.
  • Reads mail, determines subject matter, scans or copies documents, and routes appropriately.
  • Prepares and mails outgoing mail and/or correspondence related to retirement processing in accordance with the OPM guidance.
  • Prepares reports, receives and processes documents in accordance with established procedures.
  • Provides acknowledgment to customers upon receipt of retirement service requests.
  • Makes timely follow-up on pending items to ensure timely resolution of cases.
  • Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.

Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday 40 hours/week; 7:30am to 4:00pm or based upon organizational need

The work is primarily sedentary with long periods of sitting at a desk, working with computers daily. Some work may require walking in offices and similar areas for meetings.

QualificationsTo qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
GS-05 Specialized Experience: Do you possess at least one (1) full year of specialized experience, which equips you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Human Resources Assistant, GS-05 position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, this specialized experience must have been equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in Federal service to qualify at the GS-05 grade level.
Specialized experience includes:
  • Prepares reports, receives and processes documents in accordance with established procedures.
  • Maintains various filing systems.
  • Verifies enclosures or attachments are present and that document is signed and dated.
  • Makes timely follow-up on pending items to ensure timely resolution of cases.
  • Operates personal computers, word processors and associated equipment in order to input and retrieve information for charts, graphs, spreadsheets, reports and correspondence.

Note:
Evidence of specialized experience must be supported by detailed documentation of duties performed in positions held on your resume. You must provide work experience information such as hours per week, salary, and starting/ending dates of employment (month and year format) to establish you have one (1) full year of Specialized Experience at or comparable to the required grade level.
: ORGS-05 Substitution of Education for Experience (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED): Do you possess Four (4) years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.
: ORGS-05 Combination of Education and Experience (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED): Possession of a combination of successfully completed education and experience to meet the total experience requirements. (i.e. 6 months of specialized experience and 3 years of education above the high school level).
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note:
A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-05. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position. A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.

This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
