The Lead Lab Technician will lead and support product and process developers to create new products and business opportunities for the Industrial and Specialty Products division. This position will perform sample testing, support development of mimic testing, maintain a laboratory notebook, schedule maintenance of test equipment, and perform other duties to assist in developing new products. The position will require about 10 percent travel time to USS plants and potentially customers to assist in implementing new products. The Lead Lab Tech will also be responsible for supervision of Lab Tech employees and will report to the Plant Manager.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Perform various testing of standardized ISO and ASTM test methods
• Work with product and process developers to develop new test methods or application mimic equipment and procedures
• Maintain a laboratory notebook to properly document data to support creation of patents, trade secrets and/or other intellectual property that provides a business advantage
• Interface with various personal to accomplish new product development: production, supply chain, customers, suppliers, science and technology, and corporate quality
• Schedule and supervise maintenance of test equipment
• As needed manage small capital project for new methods and equipment
• As necessary, provide technical support to production
• Supervise and manage Lab Technicians
• Ensure compliance to current ISO certification and prepare materials for future ISO certifications as needed

EDUCATION:

• Must have a high school diploma. College preferred especially with Science or Engineering majors

EXPERIENCE:

• Must have a minimum of 5 years of industrial experience with preference given to people that have worked in a research and development environment.

FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

• Demonstrated mechanical skill set
• History of building collaborative relationships
• Strong verbal and written communication skill
• Knowledge and experience with safe industrial laboratory procedures including chemical handling
• Basic analytical test experience
• Basic computer and office skills
