Department's Website:Summary of Job Duties:The Biosafety Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, coordinating and maintaining a comprehensive biosafety program within the Department of Occupational Health & Safety (OHS). OHS works in close collaboration with the UAMS community to promote a safe and healthy environment for all individuals associated with the University, including students, faculty, staff, visitors and those in the surrounding community, through technical assistance, education, and regulatory oversight. OHS also coordinates with other departments to minimize the loss of resources including property, operations, and personnel.
Qualifications:Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor Degree in Microbiology, Biology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or related health sciences field with 4 years of relevant work experience OR
  • Master Degree in Microbiology, Biology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or related health sciences field with 2 years of experience.
  • Certifications that are required and will be provided by UAMS include: OSHA's Hazardous Waste and Emergency Response standard (HAZWOPER) 40 Hour initial training with an 8 hour annual refresher and CPR/AED Certification.
  • Knowledge of information technology concepts, methods and standards.
  • Knowledge of computer software and hardware.
  • Ability to provide technical advice in areas of expertise.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience as RO/ARO with the CDC Federal Select Agent Program.
  • Safety related certification through ABSA.
Additional Information:
  • The Biosafety Officer provides professional expertise to the University community in the evaluation and control of biological hazards. This includes responsibility for the Biosafety Program, the Bloodborne Pathogens program, and coordination of the Institutional Biosafety Committee.
  • The Biosafety Officer promotes safe practices and procedures in biological research, stimulates responsible activities among faculty, staff and students, provides education and guidance for the safe conduct of biological research, and ensures compliance with National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules and regulations.
