Themission of the office includes increasing the visibility of UC San Diego in California, the nation and world, through marketing and on and off campus recruitment activities to prospective first-year and transfer students and their families; school counselors; community college leaders and advisors; community based organizations; and educational organizations serving groups historically underrepresented on our campus.
The Office of Admissions hosts more than 80,000 visitors and receives, processes, and reviews over 150,000 applications for admission annually. The office works collaboratively with on and off campus partners to achieve university goals.
Position OverviewThe Associate Director of Admissions works collaboratively with the admissions leadership team to lead and guide the office in support of overall department, campus and system goals. In this role, the incumbent works through the coordinated actions of Assistant Directors to develop a comprehensive annual plan for admissions recruitment and yield events (Events); manage professional staff primarily focused on the campus visit experience (Visit Experience); and develop short- and long- term organizational goals related to information systems and technology (Systems). The Associate Director develops and manages operating budgets, human resources, and policies and procedures for each of these core functions. Additionally, the Associate Director serves as primary client and liaison with Enrollment Management Creative Services in the development of communication and marketing materials. They also supervise an Admissions Assistant primarily responsible for serving the public through the front desk of the Office of Admissions, and serves as the primary source in admissions for external communications.
The Associate Director establishes operational policies and procedures, ensures policy compliance and security of student data and records; and recommends changes to operations including short- and long-range planning. They are responsible for developing or updating business processes and training documentation to ensure business continuity. The incumbent analyzes outcomes of strategic investments with a focus on increasing efficiencies through technological solutions. They work cooperatively with the academic senate, administrative and academic units across campus (faculty, deans, directors, staff) as well as high school and community college officials in support of the university's academic mission/programs.
The Associate Director must articulate a vision for their units, communicate clear expectations and mentor a team of direct reports. This requires effective and timely recruitment, hiring, and training of a diverse team of exceptional staff. In the absence of the Director, the Associate Director will act for the Director in campus and systemwide meetings on admissions matters that fall within their purview. A member of the executive leadership team, the incumbent will work collaboratively with colleagues to strengthen infrastructure, take a digital first approach and ensure proper alignment of resources to achieve campus enrollment goals. They serve on systemwide and campus committees.
The Associate Director thinks critically and creatively about leveraging technology to address inefficient processes, scale the work of admissions professionals, and consistently deliver on the campus’ brand promise of being a progressive and bold institution. They possess strong organizational skills, a thorough understanding of recruitment best practices, data and systems required to do the work in a fast-paced environment. While responsible for leading a large and diverse team, the incumbent must be able to work independently, own their work, set priorities, multitask, and see projects through to completion.
Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of education theory, policy, practice, and evaluation.
  • Significant knowledge of the goals and mission of the University as they relate to academic preparation, recruitment, and advanced-standing admission. Demonstrated experience in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing admissions, events with significant knowledge of high schools, community colleges, and community based organizations
  • Significant knowledge of UC's colleges, schools and departmental transfer policies. experience in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing admissions, recruitment, evaluation, technical and yield activities. Knowledge of enrollment planning, and campus and state political environment.
  • Significant knowledge regarding UC's colleges / schools, general education policies and requisite transfer preparation.
  • Knowledge of fiscal management policies and practices and University personnel management policies and practices.
  • Knowledge of organizational development strategies and practice.
  • Highly skilled communication and interpersonal skills to communicate with and influence others, both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated outstanding verbal skills to effectively interact tactfully and diplomatically, yet assertively, with all levels of personnel and segments of the campus and community. Demonstrated outstanding writing skills with an ability to clearly and accurately express substance and nuance in written communications and ability to produce complex, high-quality, clear and concise written reports, policies and communications.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality. Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality, accuracy and attention to detail to respond to unexpected job demands and keep pace with rapidly changing priorities and deadlines. Knowledge of and/or experience with FERPA regulations. A high level of political acumen, diplomacy, and insight regarding the complex relationships and inter-dependencies of campus and system wide entities.
  • Expert analytical / problem-solving skills. Using expertise problem-solving skills, anticipate and/or analyze, and develop and implement innovative new procedures, practices and processes which are adaptable to constantly changing work patterns and business methods.
  • Management and supervisory skills working with professional and support staff to implement and manage programs related to the functions of the office. Skills in conflict management, complex problem-solving, and resource and time management. Experience with staff training and development.
  • Commitment to campus equity, diversity and inclusion goals. Demonstrated experience working with diverse faculty, administrators, staff, students, families, system officials, volunteers and the general public. Sensitivity to those educational issues affecting low income, first generation and underrepresented students and families.
  • Expert knowledge of common organizational- or research-specific and other computer application programs. Demonstrable high-level skills, knowledge and abilities in using a variety of computer systems, standard peripherals, email, web-based applications, word processing, relational database and spreadsheet software with the commitment and ability to update and expand skills as required.
  • Knowledge of higher education marketing and branding strategies, and media platform techniques.
  • Experience reviewing undergraduate admissions applications in a holistic process which considers multiple factors.
  • Proven knowledge and ability to use a student information system, databases, CRM (Slate preferred), and other admissions tools to support student recruitment, application review and yield efforts.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Duties may require direct contact with children (defined as individuals under the age of 18). Completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) form is required.
Job offer is contingent upon a satisfactory clearance based on background check results.

Available to work evenings/weekends during peak periods; some domestic and international travel may be expected.
Pay Transparency ActAnnual Full Pay Range: $91,300 - $170,700 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $43.73 - $81.75
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
