What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Aide – LCF– O'Hanlon, Charles – 2.14.25 position at UChicago Argonne, LLC?
This project investigates the use of Implicit Neural Representations (INRs) to compress and predict three-dimensional fields generated by application codes that typically run on ALCF supercomputers, such as NekRS and LAMMPS. INRs have proven to be a powerful tool for compressing large-scale volume data, enabling efficient in situ visualization. Building on prior work that developed a distributed volumetric neural representation optimized for in situ visualization, this project aims to apply INRs to distributed data generated by real-world simulation codes. We will study how INRs can achieve state-of-the-art compression speed, quality, and ratios for outputs from NekRS and LAMMPS. This includes exploring their potential to predict high-temporal-frequency data fields, which could further facilitate reactive in situ visualization. A working prototype will be developed and demonstrated on Polaris and Aurora supercomputers, integrated with the Ascent infrastructure.
