UChicago Medicine is Hiring a VP, Chief Technology Officer Near Chicago, IL

Join a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as the Vice President, Chief Technology Officer. We are seeking a driven technology leader with a proven track record of modernizing a complex Information Technology (IT) infrastructure. The CTO will report to the SVP, Chief Information Officer (CIO) and be an innovative technology partner providing expertise and decision making for all IT architectural aspects across the UChicago Medicine enterprise.

The Chief Technology Officer will be a key stakeholder in setting the IT direction of UChicago Medicine and have overall responsibility for managing technology infrastructure planning and deployment, providing technology vision, enabling innovation, and understanding the IT trends that can create business value. As the CTO, you will oversee the development of enterprise standards and technology architecture, technology evaluation, and the technology portfolio management and governance processes. You will work closely with clinical and business leadership teams and influence technical and architectural aspects of enterprise-wide business decisions. You will also propose the basic IT philosophies and direction related to planning for and acquiring advanced IT. You will work closely with the Chief Information Security and Privacy Officer to identify and address deficiencies that place the organization at risk for vulnerability as well as in conducting investigations with internal and external entities. The CTO will develop and communicate the necessary direction and policies for enterprise standards to ensure high performance and reliable service. Ultimately, the CTO will be accountable for all IT Infrastructure performance, operation, and strategy to meet business and innovation goals of UChicago Medicine.

Who you are:

A visionary, ethical, and transformational IT leader with a passion for applying innovative technologies to today’s problems and:

  • A Bachelor’s degree coupled with a minimum of 10 years IT experience, including 5 years leading directors, managers, and staff.
  • An advanced degree in a technology or business field and proven experience leading large scale, complex projects preferred.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education.
  • Past success leading IT in a complex, highly matrixed environment with numerous stakeholders.
  • Deep technical experience supporting information security environments, cyber forensics/remediation, disaster recovery, business continuity, and partnering with internal and external stakeholders during relevant investigations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage contracts and vendor relationships.
  • Proven skills and experience in writing and verbal communications, presenting to groups, budget management, strategic planning, and large-scale, complex, project management.
  • Advanced, conceptual knowledge of technologies within all areas of the IT organization.
  • A track record of building highly successful teams while collaborating with peers, colleagues, and lower-level staff and the ability to prioritize conflicting demands and ensure projects and workloads are completed on time while maintaining high morale.
  • Exemplary customer service skills and demonstrated financial and business acumen.

The scope of authority of this position involves the entire health system with affiliates and joint venture partners. Technology and business decisions made within UChicago Medicine are highly complex and must include existing products, resources, models, and services supported across the institution in order to ensure appropriate integration.

What you’ll do as the Chief Technology Officer:

  • Lead strategic and tactical planning to achieve UChicago Medicine’s institutional goals by prioritizing initiatives, through the IT governance process, and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future technologies.
  • Assess the impact and effectiveness of UChicago Medicine’s organizational telecommunication and technology architecture to ensure alignment with institutional mission, vision, values, strategic goals, and culture.
  • Collaborate with IT leaders and other internal stakeholders, including clinicians, department chairs, and administrators to understand their technology needs and provide strategic guidance and support for digital transformation including investments in technology, applications, business process, personnel.
  • Responsible for a multi-million-dollar budget including both capital and operating expenses and provide guidance and have responsibility for ongoing operations, budgets, a multi-year budget forecast and both strategic and operational planning.
  • Monitor changes and advancements in technology to discover ways UChicago Medicine can gain a competitive advantage by incorporating innovative solutions to potentially enhance operational efficiency, patient care, and digital transformation and anticipate UChicago Medicine’s needs, including the Cancer Center under development.
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of a reliable, scalable, and secure IT infrastructure to support business operations and clinical systems including smart building technologies and Internet of Things devices within new, expanded, or renovated facilities.
  • Ensure the smooth operation of critical systems, networks, and data centers, telecommunications, service desk, field services, and desktop engineering minimizing downtime and optimizing system performance.
  • Provide guidance for the development of technology related policies and procedures and represent IT on business-driven policy committees within and outside of UChicago Medicine and ensure that those policies, practices, and regulatory requirements are addressed and followed.
  • Partner with the Chief Information Security and Privacy Officer, adhering to their recommendations and in support of the information security strategies and support implementation of systems for security and safety of facilities, sensitive information, assets, and resources.
  • Implement robust disaster recovery and business continuity plans to safeguard against potential disruptions.
  • Represent the CIO within and outside of UChicago Medicine at industry, state, and federal meetings to ensure that the interests of UChicago Medicine are considered.
  • Foster partnerships with technology vendors, government agencies, and industry organizations to stay abreast of industry standards, policies, and trends that drive digital transformation.
  • Create and promote a culture of excellent customer service and ensure continuous delivery of IT support and services through oversight of service level agreements.
  • Oversee development and implementation of a high performing team with an effective and efficient organizational structure that supports the ongoing operations of the institution by promoting continuous learning and development.
  • Supervise recruitment, development, retention, and organization of a large and diverse staff (100 ) consisting of directors, managers, and professional staff as well as contract staff and service providers.
  • Maintain the highest ethical standard and with excellent judgement and discernment in decision makin.
