The University of Iowa Community Clinics (UICC) is seeking a patient centered Clinical Practice Leader (CPL) to perform specific tasks to assist members of UICC team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager. The CPL will provide technical, informational and accreditation expertise to the healthcare team in a variety of clinical situations. This position will directly support our Specialty Clinics.

Position Specific Summary:

The Advanced Nursing Practice Coordinator/Supervisor for the University of Iowa Community Clinics (UICC) provides leadership in clinical care coordination/specialized nursing care, clinical education of nursing staff and health professionals, or use clinical nursing expertise in improving nursing and health care through the management of quality or design of informatics, etc. More specifically, the clinical practice leader (CPL) is an advanced nurse leader and clinician. The CPL is accountable for patient care outcomes through assimilation and application of evidence-based information to design, implement and evaluate patient care.

The CPL leads clinical care delivery within a healthcare setting; provides and manages care for individuals and cohorts of patients. The CPL designs, implements, and evaluates services by coordinating, delegating, and supervising the care provided by the healthcare team, including nurses, technicians, and other professionals. The CPL may assist in clinical staffing as directed.

The CPL leads and supports a culture of evidence-based practice (EBP); and supervises, develops, and implements EBP standards; provides staff education; and facilitates quality and process improvements.

The CPL leads clinical care delivery within a healthcare setting; provides and manages care for individuals and cohorts of patients. The CPL leads and supports a culture of evidence-based practice (EBP); and supervises, develops, and implements EB standards; provides staff education; and facilitates quality and process improvements. 

The CPL is an expert who oversees the clinical care and focuses on improving patient outcomes and reducing costs. The CPL improves the quality of patient care and enhances the unit’s effectiveness by:

• Promoting critical thinking and innovation in clinical care.

• Using evidence–based practice and research to enhance patient care.

• Implementing effective decision making and productively managing change

Position Responsibilities:

• Provide Leadership & Direct Care for Specialized Patient Population

• Lead changes in nursing care based on systematic evaluation and evidence-based model.

• Assure on-boarding and competency of nursing staff and clinical staff.

• Provide specialized patient care.

• Maintain and update equipment and supplies used in providing patient care.

• Incorporate findings from research and evidence-based standards/literature into clinical practice.

• Provide deep level of knowledge of clinical to nurses and other members of the healthcare team; patients and families

• Maintain knowledge of all regulatory and compliance standards for health care environment and specialty service.

• Ensure staff understanding and maintenance of regulatory and compliance standards.

• Ensure compliance with UI policies and procedures.

• Other duties as assigned.

Human Resources Management

• Supervise care delivery by nursing staff and other members of the health care team. Provide feedback to individuals, and evaluative feedback and recommendations to managers regarding staff member performance.

• Facilitate and support growth and development of individual staff members, and team.

Department Summary:

University of Iowa Community Clinics (UICC) provides comprehensive care to the Iowa City community and beyond. With multiple community clinics, including Bettendorf Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, etc. UICC is home to providers and staff that provide comprehensive care outside of the hospital setting and give the community a sense of care whenever they need it most.

The role is budgeted for 50% direct patient care and 50% administration (education development and implementation) that will flex between clinic needs.

Percent of Time: 100%

Schedule: 40 hours per week will be accomplished primarily Monday - Friday, Variable hours between 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM with limited off-shift/weekend coverage to support our weekend option staff. There will be one week of call (Tuesday-Tuesday) about every 6-8 weeks but this will not start until you are fully oriented and feel comfortable taking call.

Pay Grade: 5B https://hr.uiowa.edu/pay/plans

Salary: $67,330 to 130,346 (based on years of experience) 

Education Required: 

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing or Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP). Prefer Master's or Doctorate with Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) designation. If Master’s/Doctorate Degree is in related field, Baccalaureate in Nursing required
    • If qualified applicant does not have a Master's Degree, the applicant will need to complete an advanced degree in nursing, health care administration, business administration or education within five years of beginning this position. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Current, valid license to practice nursing in Iowa
  • Considerable clinical experience (minimum 3 years) in acute nursing
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience with: Staff education and development, outcomes-based practice and quality improvement, leading change processes including implementation of evidence-based practice
  • Demonstrates leadership/management skills e.g.: analytical thinking/problem solving, takes initiative, serves as change agent, motivates/influences others
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills and collaboration with interdisciplinary team 
  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience fostering a welcoming and respectful work environment
  • Role models professional practice and has reputation for clinical and service excellence
  • Proficient in computer software applications
  • Driver's License and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards. 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Certification: Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) - Certification by the Commission on Nurse Certification or certification relevant to clinical specialty
  • Member/active participation in professional organization
  • Experience with Nursing Research
  • Experience (2 years minimum) in a specialty field such as Urology, dermatology, women's health. 
  • Experience in Outpatient population
  • Experience creating/managing microsystems of care
  • Demonstrated effective teaching skills for staff and patient education
  • Experience in leading changes in nursing care based on systematic evaluation and evidence-based model
