The UI Heart and Vascular Center is seeking a Part-Time (60%) Core ECMO Specialist to provide cardiac care and pulmonary ECMO for patients in CVICU, MICU, PICU and NICU under the direction and supervision of the ECMO Medical Director, the attending ICU staff physician, ECLS Director and the ECMO Coordinator; operate/manage ECMO circuit and associated equipment; and provide specific clinical care for the patient related to the ECMO procedure.

Being a Nurse in the Heart and Vascular Center

Duties to include:

  • Assess patients’ ECMO care needs, evaluate effectiveness of care provided, and integrate ECMO theory and research into clinical practice. Provide leadership to members of the nursing team in order to maintain patient care standards.
  • Collaboratively coordinates the continuum of care across settings as it pertains to ECMO care.
  • Develops patient care plan based on patient condition, age, and psychological, educational, and socioeconomic conditions that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes as it pertains to ECMO care.
  • Collaborates and integrates contributions of patients and families into multidisciplinary patient care plan as it pertains to ECMO care.
  • Assists with developing, coordinating and implementing transfer/discharge planning throughout episode of care as it pertains to ECMO.
  • Implements interventions according to department, division, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain safe environment for patients, visitors and staff. Follows universal precautions.
  • Assist with circuit set up, cannulation, decannulation and post ECMO cleanup.
  • Operate and manage ECMO System according to protocols and standards.
  • Provide clinical expertise for the management of the unique care needs of the ECMO patient as it pertains to the overall plan of care.
  • Participate in ongoing training sessions related to new equipment and new/revised protocols/standards.
  • Participate in quality management activities as required by regulatory agencies.
  • Participate in patient/family education as it relates to ECMO.
  • Regular attendance and participation in ECMO team meetings and continuing education.
  • Position requires on-call assignment, rotating holiday and weekend coverage, and possible overtime to ensure availability of ECMO service 24/7.

Education Requirement:

An Associate’s Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required.

Experience Requirement:

  • Minimum 3 years ICU experience within the past 6 months.
  • Minimum 6 months experience as an ECMO Specialist.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage critically-ill patient population.
  • Proven capacity to function with a high degree of autonomy while collaborating within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Certification/Licensure Requirement:

  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required.
  • Current BLS certification required by start date.
  • ACLS certification required within 6 mos. of start.
  • PALS certification required within 6 mos. of start.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or Master’s Degree in Nursing highly desired.
  • If Baccalaureate Degree is not yet obtained, active enrollment in a BSN program is highly desired.
  • Current ACLS certification desired.
  • Current PALS certification desired.
  • Previous experience with clinical nursing documentation in EPIC.
