Overview:

Heavy Equipment Operator

Summary

Operates several types of power construction equipment, such as excavators, shovels, tractors, scrapers, or motor graders, to excavate, move, and grade earth. Adjusts hand-wheels and depresses pedals or manipulates joysticks to drive machines and control attachments, such as blades, buckets, scrapers, and swing booms. Supervises other equipment operators and laborers and coordinates with other trades and subcontractors.

Essential Functions

Excavate to correct grade

Supervise material delivery and export by communicating with trucking operators and suppliers.

Additional duties as assigned by the Project Superintendent.

Reports to and meets with project superintendent to coordinate and schedule earthmoving operations to ensure other trades can maintain progress.

Completes work within time and budget constraints.

Tend pumps, compressors, or generators to provide power for tools, machinery, or equipment or to heat or move materials.

Knowledge and Critical Skills/Expertise:

Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.

Must be able to set up and assemble rigging and hoisting equipment.

Motor grader experience.

Front End Loader experience.

Back hoe experience.

Excavator experience.

Ability to operate basic construction equipment, such as forklifts and skid steer equipment.

Ability to perform duties and operation of tools of the trade in strict compliance with OSHA rules.

Responsibilities:

Required Experience:

Previous experience with non-residential construction

Previous experience installing sewers, water lines, and other underground utilities

Proven ability to manage earthwork operations with 5 years related supervisory experience and 10 years operating experience.

Must be able to perform operations in compliance with contract specifications and drawings.

Must be able to operate lasers, levels and related equipment and prerform mathematical calculations to control grade and depth of excavation.

Must be eligible for access to and work on US Military installations.

Must have clean driving record and drivers license.

Must be able to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions including both hot (100 ) and cold windy weather. Construction jobsites include irregular surfaces, open excavations, and temporary structures

Environmental Conditions:

Ability to withstand extreme temperatures (cold and hot).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and outside weather conditions.

The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles

The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.

The wearing of appropriate personal protective equipment mitigates risks associated with these conditions and is mandatory.

Work environment is that of a construction site.

May be working in close proximity to moving equipment.

Qualifications:

Authorized Driver Requirement: Employee must have a valid drivers license and three (3) year clean driving record. Employee must follow all Authorized Driver Policy and Procedures regarding approved vehicle usage.

All employees must pass Non-DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all UIC Non-DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program guidelines and requirements.

Candidates must pass a background check in order to fill this position.
