Overview

Mechanic Assistant 

• Assist mechanics as needed to include light to medium maintenance of equipment.• Procurement of deliveries and freight. • Cleaning of mechanic shop. • Oiling of project vehicles and equipment at remote job site. • Insure that Zero Tolerance & Safety Procedures are followed to not allow any spills or injuries on project. • Perform duties and operation of equipment of the trade in strict compliance with OSHA rules. • Check equipment prior to each work shift to inspect for safety and operational requirements. • Perform preventative maintenance and general repair work up through major repairs to a variety of construction and heavy civil equipment including rock crushing equipment. • Perform equipment and vehicle servicing. • Document all deliveries with project provided forms. • Work hours are subject to change depending on activities and work load schedules. May be asked to work more than the scheduled hours due to needs for emergency fueling services required by project due to circumstances relating to weather and or fuel deliveries to project site. • Report any incident, situations or activity that may affect the company's ability to operate safely, ethically, and profitably to the Supervisor. • All other duties as assigned.Knowledge & Critical Skills/Expertise: • Work independently with minimal supervision. • Have common knowledge for the use and operational needs required to fuel and maintain equipment. Operator must demonstrate safe operation of equipment and vehicles. • Operator must be able to operate equipment with manual transmissions. • Be able to work alone using proper judgment regarding personal safety. • Ability to perform independently without direct supervision. • Ability to maintain open and responsive communication with Superintendent. • Have punctual, on time work history and attendance. • 4 years of equipment and vehicle service experience which includes the basic understanding of equipment and vehicle operating systems preferred. • Be required to work in -20F and colder to complete job duties. All fueling/oiling services are done in the field and are subject to all types of weather conditions.Required Experience: • Valid drivers license required.• Valid Class A CDL w/HAZMAT and tanker endorsement preferred but not required. • Welding experience required.• UIC Shareholder preference.• This job is not rotational. This is a full time position located in Utqiagvik Alaska. Relocation assistance is not offered for this position. • Must pass drug test.

Responsibilities

Physical Demands:

• Irregular surfaces, slippery surfaces, moving equipment, open excavations, temporary structures, and general construction hazards. • Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work, heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 51 pounds. • When operating equipment, subject to constant jarring of body due to jerking movement of equipment and operating on uneven surfaces. • Must be able to sit in the operators seat of equipment and safely reach all pedals, switches, levers, buttons, etc. required to safely operate the equipment (if authorized for that piece of equipment); • Must be able to sit in the operators seat of equipment and have an adequate field of vision of all instruments, gauges, warning lights, as well as an acceptable field of vision out of the windows and/or mirrors (if authorized for that piece of equipment). • Must be able to have good motion of range for body and limbs. • Be able to reach in all directions. • Must be able to climb up and down equipment and facilities ladders and stairs with best practiced safety standards. • Handle and manipulate objects and material. • Coordinate the movement of eyes, hands, feet and fingers to operate and complete mechanical services on vehicles and equipment. • Lift 50 lbs from ground level, waist level and or overhead. • Be able to exert from 25 to 51 Lbs. of force occasionally, 10-25 Lbs. of work frequently and up to 10 Lbs. of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:

• Will work in all types of weather. • Work in different elevations. • Job site will contain light to heavy equipment, small to large equipment, materials, communication equipment and tools. • People standing, walking, sitting, signaling, and talking. • May be occasional bells, alarms, and whistles. • Applicant may be subject to environmental conditions of extreme cold, noise exposure, constantly changing work environment, irregular surfaces, slippery surfaces, moving equipment, open excavations, temporary structures, and general construction hazards.

Work Environment Summary:

Applicant may be subject to environmental conditions such as cold, heat, exposed to noise, hazards, and/or close quarters.

Applicant must be aware of work environment at all times.

Qualifications

Authorized Driver Requirement: Employee must have a valid driver’s license and three (3) year clean driving record. Employee must follow

all Authorized Driver Policy and Procedures regarding approved vehicle usage.

All employees must pass Non-DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all UIC Non-DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program guidelines and requirements.
