UIC is Hiring a Director Departmental Advising-LAS Student Academic Affairs Near Chicago, IL

Position Summary
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences' Department of Student Academic Affairs has five divisions: academic programs, career development, degree advising, pre-professional advising, and recruitment and engagement. Since 2013, LAS has utilized a cohort advising model to meet students' needs.

Under the supervision of the Executive Assistant Dean, the Director of Departmental Advising oversees academic departmental-based advising, a division of LAS Degree Advising within LAS's Department of Student Academic Affairs. As a member of the degree advising leadership team, the Director of Departmental Advising collaborates with the Director of Academic Advising and the Director of Policy and Procedure to ensure that advising initiatives, administrative policies, and business processes, are complementary and coordinated across LAS degree advising.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • • Provides collaborative leadership within Student Academic Affairs and degree advising administration.
  • • Provides direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Departmental Advising and departmental Academic Advisors. Conducts employee performance reviews and identifies professional development opportunities for staff. _x000d__x000d__x000d__x000d__x000d__x000d_
  • • Co-facilitates the departmental advisor meetings.
  • • Provides leadership in times of change to college-administered degrees and programs, specifically in areas of: advisor training, degree audit report review, enrollment management, and communications.
  • • Chairs search committees for departmental advisors and recommends hiring to the Executive Assistant Dean. Assists with onboarding and participates in the training and continued professional development of departmental advisors.
  • • Oversees departmental-based advising initiatives such as: mandatory second-year major advising; mandatory transfer, readmit, intercollege transfer advising; continuing student progress within the major review; new student advising; etc.
  • • In moments of staff transitions and departures, provides transition support to academic departments through service as an advisor for the undergraduate student population, in evaluating students’ degree progress/eligibility, educating and providing direction and guidance on degree requirements, course selection, etc.
  • • Collaborates with the Director of Career Development and Major Exploration regarding department-based programming for career development and major exploration.
  • • Documents and proposes improvements to the Executive Assistant Dean in areas relating to enrollment management, such as: course availability, academic standing, progress-with-in degree program, etc.
  • • Documents and proposes improvements to the Director for Educational Policy and Academic Programs in areas relating to curriculum implementation such as: course sequencing, BANNER-enforced pre-requisite checking, waitlisting, etc.
  • • Other related duties include participating in and/or leading special projects as assigned._x000d__x000d__x000d_
