UIC is Hiring a Honors Academic Advisor and Program Specialist Near Chicago, IL

Provides academic and career planning and advising to Honors students by guiding them in the development of their academic and life goals. Develops curriculum, teaches and provides direct instructional support for Honors classes. Develops and implements Honors academic and student affairs programs involving outreach to internal and external constituencies including students, faculty, alumni, high schools, and community agencies. In support of these duties, develops and maintains information of best practices and literature concerning academic advising and student development theories; program requirements in all UIC degree-granting colleges; UIC Honors requirements and programs and national Honors best practices.
Duties & Responsibilities

  • Advising
  • Advises students on Honors curriculum and requirements and associated academic, career and personal issues; identifies the educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists with the analysis of each option, including possible outcomes and their implications; if needed, refers student to counseling and other services provided by other campus support units; sets up an action plan for the student to explore alternative careers and related majors.
  • Assists students with Honors course selection and co-curricular engagement, University-wide major and pre-professional requirements, financial aid and scholarship choices, study abroad options, eligibility requirements and career paths.
  • Assesses the student's stage of development (academic, career, and personal) and determines suitable developmental tasks; assists student in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals.
  • Teaching
  • Develops curriculum and teaches Honors courses. 
  • Advises students as they develop topics for the senior capstone thesis by meeting with students, discussing, reviewing, and suggesting topics and research materials and by linking students to faculty mentors.
  • Programming
  • Develops, implements, and monitors Honors specific programs, such as student/faculty mentoring program, tutoring programs, etc.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors Honors College involvement in broader UIC programs in partnership with campus units, such as Recruitment and Admissions, Orientation, Study Abroad, Undergraduate Research, etc.
  • Organizes and leads student organizations such as the student advisory board, local chapters of honor societies, and other student organizations.
  • Plan, assign and review work of student staff to ensure that group objectives are met. Hire, train, develop and manage student staff to ensure that a qualified staff exists to meet group objectives.
  •  Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
