JOB TITLE: BUS DRIVER
WORK DAYS: 10 Months; 201 Paid Days (Including Holidays & Basic Vacation Days)
SUMMARY: Under supervision of the Superintendent or designee, the Bus Driver drives a school bus and transports students over designated routes; does related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Note: These examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in positions allocated to this class. - Drives a school bus over designated routes in all weather conditions according to established time schedules.
- Transports students and school staff to special events, athletic trips, and other field trips.
- Maintains order among students on the bus following Federal, State and district policies and regulations.
- Assists handicapped students in boarding or leaving bus and escorts students with street crossings at bus stops as needed.
- Performs safety inspection of bus prior to operation.
- Reports mechanical defects and needed repairs.
- Cleans/washes bus interior and exterior, windows and mirrors.
- Keeps records and prepares routine reports.
- Operates two-way radio system.
- Attends safety meetings and programs.
- Contacts parents regarding student behavior and discipline matters.
- Conducts yearly bus evacuation drills.
- May render first aid to passengers, following prescribed safety and first aid procedures.
- Monitors and maintains appropriate fuel level of bus.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS /REQUIREMENTS: (At time of application)
KNOWLEDGE OF/ABILITY TO:
- Safe driving practices.
- Appropriate interaction with students, parents, staff, school administrators, general public, law enforcement, etc.
ABILITY TO:
- Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance.
- Operate a school bus and to drive a school bus safely, efficiently, on time, and in accordance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
- Maintain order on a school bus.
- Learn a prescribed bus route.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Keep records and prepare reports.
- Learn and carry out prescribed safety checks, bus evacuation drills and other emergency procedures.
- Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, parents, administrators, District employees, and the general public.
- Operate a two-way radio or other communication equipment assigned to the bus.
- Remain calm and composed in stressful situations.
- Operate a computer device as needed.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Possess and maintain current as a condition for ongoing employment, a valid California Driver’s License, Certificates and endorsements from CHP and DMV to operate a school bus.
- Passing required initial and subsequent random, drug and alcohol screenings.
- Possess, and maintain as a condition for ongoing employment, First Aid and CPR certifications as required by DMV and CHP to operate a school bus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation)
- Speak, read and understand sufficiently to successfully receive/provide information to/from students, parents, supervisors/administrators, co-workers, the public, and to ensure proper student behavior during transportation etc.
- Capacity to remain in a seated position for extended periods of time
- Physical ability to perform assigned duties, including sitting for long periods of time, performing emergency student evacuations, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, etc.
- Ability to lift and/or carry/drag up to 25 pounds to assist students during bus emergency evacuations.
