UMass Boston is Hiring a Phlebotomist Near Boston, MA

General Summary:

This position description is a guide to the critical duties and essential functions of the job, not an all-inclusive list of responsibilities, qualifications, physical demands, and work environment conditions. Position descriptions are reviewed and revised to meet the changing needs of the organization.

Perform venipunctures, finger sticks, and other approved specimen collection procedures, process medical laboratory tests and document results for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. Follow all CLIA requirements and regulations. Serve as a back-up for clinical team members as needed.

Examples of Duties:

  • Ability to set priorities, produce accurate work, and meet deadlines; ability to function in a setting with a wide variety of duties and numerous interruptions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of medical laboratory principles, standards, applications, and tests.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of medical laboratory safety, cleanliness and infection control policies and regulations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of medical laboratory equipment uses and maintenance.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and organizational skills at all levels.
  • Demonstrate understanding HIPAA regulations and adhere to standards.
  • Demonstrate proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Demonstrate ability to be self-directed, learn quickly with strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate ability to work with electronic health record system.
  • Demonstrate ability to work with CLIA waived and EUA diagnostic analyzers (systems).
  • Demonstrate ability to work with laboratory processing/information system.
  • Technically savvy with the use laptops, smart phones, One Drive, and barcode scanners.
  • Punctual and reliable.
  • Flexible with shifting plans and taking leadership in new, ambiguous scenarios.
  • Demonstrate ability to work with campus partners and vendors.
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently with minimal direction, excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to work well under pressure with multiple competing priorities and deadlines Ability to lead and direct the work of others in a supervisory capacity.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Phlebotomy experience required, minimum of 1 year of relevant experience in a fast-paced outpatient medical office.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office required.

Bachelor's degree in the health sciences preferred.

Certification and Licensure:

MLT, ASCP, CPT or AMT certification preferred.

CPR certification

UNIQUE PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS, ENVIRONMENT, AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

Requires the ability to move PC's and printers weighing up to 20 lbs.

Requires planning, organizing, and working on multiple tasks at one time.

Work Environment: Laboratory and medical office environment, frequent exposure to bodily fluids. Possible exposure to infectious specimens, communicable diseases, and toxic substances. Interaction with members of the health care team and diverse college-aged population.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

To accomplish this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation, each essential function satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to help enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Operations (70%)

  • Arrange daily activities based on urgency of requests.
  • Obtain blood and other bodily specimens from patients per laboratory orders by performing venipunctures, finger sticks, and other approved specimen collection techniques, process medical laboratory tests and document results.
  • Arrange daily activities based on urgency of requests; review lab schedule and orders, ensure all results are finalized within the standardized turnaround time.
  • Complete lab requisition forms as needed.
  • Perform point of care testing as directed.
  • Prepare patients before collecting their specimens.
  • Explain blood draw and specimen collection procedures to patients and answer any questions about the process.
  • Adhere to all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain sanitary work areas.
  • Gather medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, specimen collection containers and test tubes.
  • Identify patients and their personal information using their ID, documents or other means. Accurately updating patient information in the organization's database before collecting the patient's specimen.
  • Determine the right venipuncture method based on patient age and health status.
  • Reassure patients and help them relax.
  • Find veins that are suitable for puncture.
  • Identifies and manages syncopal events resulting from venipuncture.
  • Draw blood using sterilized needles, vacutainer, and other equipment.
  • Ensure optimal quality and quantity of the patient's specimen.
  • Label samples correctly.
  • Keep accurate records of specimens and tests.
  • Perform scheduled controls on all point of care testing kits and analyzers.
  • Clean and maintain laboratory equipment per manufacturer's instructions; schedule system/equipment maintenance as needed.
  • Order and maintain adequate laboratory supplies.
  • Initiate EHR and LIS tech support as needed and collaborate with support team to resolve system errors/downtime.
  • Maintain records and documentation for proficiency testing to meet CLIA and MDPH requirements and regulations.
  • Serve as a back-up for clinical team members as needed by controlling patient flow, performing EKG tests, obtaining blood pressure measurements, documenting vital signs in the EMR.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Work with supervising Lab director and Lab Manager and always following their guidance and directions.

Supervision (30%)

Supervise and delegate tasks to student employees who are functioning as a student lab assistant. Training student lab assistants on how to correctly perform point of care tests and other job-related duties.

Performs other related duties as required.
