UNC Health Appalachian is Hiring a HIM Operations Specialist II Near Boone, NC

Position Summary
HIM Operations Specialist ll is responsible for analysis and deficiency assignment of inpatient and outpatient electronic medical records to ensure compliance with Medical Staff Bylaws/Rules and Regulations, as well as state, federal, and accreditation requirements. The HIM Operations Specialist ll performs deficiency monitoring and provider suspension/reinstatement duties, and assists providers with record completion. The HIM Operations Specialist ll performs timely review and completion of electronic work queues within the information system to facilitate timely record processing for continuity of care and hospital reimbursement. The HIM Operations Specialist ll performs compliance reviews as directed to ensure compliance with CMS and TJC standards, with feedback provided to medical staff. The HIM Operations Specialist ll performs quality assurance reviews as directed to facilitate medical record integrity. Key Responsibilities:

Medical Record Analysis:

  • Analyze and update inpatient and outpatient medical records for completeness.
  • Ensure reports and signatures are included and deficiencies are correctly assigned.

Work Queue and Compliance:

  • Review daily work queues for timely processing.
  • Stay updated on hospital policies, bylaws, and TJC/CMS standards.

Record Monitoring and Communication:

  • Perform weekly delinquent record monitoring and manage provider notifications.
  • Communicate effectively with providers and departmental staff.

Quality Assurance and Document Management:

  • Conduct quality assurance on document indexing and import documents accurately.
  • Ensure scanned images are legible, correctly indexed, and free of duplicates.

Operational and Departmental Support:

  • Provide backup support for team members and release of information functions.
  • Participate in departmental activities and performance improvement initiatives.

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with education and experience. Hiring compensation ranges from $16.00 - $23.20 / hour. This position is benefits eligible after a 60-day waiting period.


Position Qualifications
Minimum Education
  • High school graduate or GED equivalent required.
  • Associates Degree in healthcare related field preferred.
  • Intermediate keyboarding familiarity to perform job functions required.
  • Intermediate skill with Microsoft Office required.
Experience
  • A minimum of one year of previous experience in healthcare setting required to include knowledge of medical record format and content.
  • A minimum of one year of previous experience using an electronic medical record.
  • Previous experience performing quality audits in healthcare setting preferred.
Required Registration/License/Certification
  • No registrations or certifications are required
  • RHIT certification is preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with the public, patients, family, staff, and physician and acts within the chain of command, utilizing positive verbal and non-verbal skills
  • Competent in delivering safe and effective patient care within legal limits of license and certifications and hospital policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of the continuum of care provided in the patient care department.
  • Ability to demonstrate exceptional customer service to patients, family, staff, and physicians

  • Manual dexterity and mobility
  • Prolonged, extensive or considerable sitting/standing/walking
  • Bending, squatting, twisting, and turning
  • Near acuity: ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less
Working Conditions
  • Not exposed to the risk of bloodborne diseases
  • Frequently exposed to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment, odorous chemicals and specimens, and unpleasant elements (accident, injury, slippery surfaces, uneven surfaces), etc.
  • Subject to irregular hours (days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays) and emergencies
  • Continuous sitting for long periods = to or greater than > 8 hours per shift
  • Speaking, reading, and writing, expanded > 8 hours per day
  • Exposed to vibration and cramped spaces > 1-hour day
  • Frequently per shift lifts, carries, pushes, and/or pulls <30 lbs.
  • Frequently per hour bends, squats kneels, twists turns and reaches
  • Frequently per minute: hand, finger, and wrist repetition and moderate dexterity
  • Frequently per hour: exposed to close eye work
  • Infrequently per shift: may be exposed to ionizing/nonionizing radiation exposure, including x-ray and microwave
