UNC Health Appalachian is Hiring a Medical Assistant II/ LPN Near Boone, NC

Position Summary

App Rheumatology is seeking a dedicated and experienced Medical Assistant (MA) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join our dynamic healthcare team. This position will encompass a variety of clinical and administrative responsibilities, including but not limited to patient care, referrals, prior authorizations, and infusion coordination. The ideal candidate will have a strong clinical background, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to providing high-quality patient care. Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Duties: Prepare patients for examination and treatment, including taking medical histories and vital signs. Assist physicians during examinations and procedures. Administer medications and injections as directed by the physician. Perform phlebotomy and other laboratory procedures. Monitor and document patient progress and treatment outcomes. Provide patient education and instruction on medication, diet, and follow-up care.
  • Administrative Duties: Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records in the electronic health record (EHR) system. Assist with front desk duties, including patient check-in and check-out, as needed. Manage inventory and order medical supplies and medications. Collaborate with other healthcare team members to ensure continuity of care.
  • Infusion Coordination Duties: Schedule and coordinate patient infusion appointments. Prepare and administer intravenous (IV) medications under the supervision of a physician. Monitor patients during infusions for adverse reactions and manage any complications. Maintain infusion records and ensure compliance with all safety protocols and guidelines.
  • Referral/PA Coordinator Duties: Coordinate and manage patient referrals to specialists and ancillary services. Obtain prior authorizations for medications, diagnostic tests, and procedures. Communicate with insurance companies to verify coverage and benefits. Track and follow up on referral and authorization requests to ensure timely processing. Maintain accurate and detailed records of all referral and authorization activities.
Compensation is commensurate upon education, experience, certification, and internal equity. Benefits eligible after a 60 day waiting period. 
Position Qualifications
Minimum Education
  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Associates Degree in Medical Assisting or LPN.
Experience
  • Prior clinical experience is required as a Medical Assistant or LPN preferably in rheumatology, oncology, or similar. 
Required Registration/License/Certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association is required at time of hire.
  • RMA, AAMA, CCMA, LPN certification is required at time of hire

  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented healthcare environment.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology and electronic health records (EHR) systems.
Physical Demands
  • Standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods.
  • Lifting and carrying medical equipment and supplies, occasionally weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Bending, stooping, and reaching.
  • Manual dexterity for performing medical procedures and operating equipment.
  • Clear and effective communication with patients and team members.
Working Conditions

  • Interaction with patients, healthcare providers, and support staff in a professional and collaborative setting.
