Summary:

Responsible for assisting the Director of Transplant Services in overall operations for Ventricular Assist Device, Heart Transplant and Lung Transplant programs for the UNC Center for Transplant Care through daily oversight of activities including 24/7 management for Clinical Operations. Works with their teams to achieve goals and objectives and partners with internal and external stakeholders to further the transplant mission and to meet goals for innovative care. Accountable for departmental Personnel Management, Education, Accreditation and Regulatory Compliance, Fiscal Management, Communication, Customer Service, Goals/Outcomes Management, and Quality/Process Improvement Initiatives to ensure delivery state of art, safe, efficient, quality care consistent with organizational and regulatory standards. Reports to the Director of Transplant Services.


Responsibilities:

1. Communication - Provides resources and support for direct reports in communicating and clarifying roles/responsibilities. Develops and maintains positive relationships with key individuals internally and externally to enhance overall Transplant Departmental processes.
2. Customer Service - Assists Director in establishing systems, processes, people, and education that will improve internal and external customer satisfaction and positive results for the department and institution. Acts as a Role Model for staff and leads direct reports in supporting team, departmental, and institutional expectations in customer service excellence.
3. Fiscal Management - Collaborates with Director in preparation, implementation and monitoring of departmental budget, (variance reporting and analysis) adjusts business and clinical practices as needed to accomplish clinical, operational and financial goals. Tracks/Trends departmental productivity statistics.
4. Goals/Outcomes Management - Collaborates with Director to establish goals for the department that are congruent with hospital goals. Reviews overall department performance to ensure staff are meeting or exceeding target outcome goals. Reconciles the needs of the team leaders and institution relative to department initiatives. Determines and oversees successful implementation of optimum methods to operationalize system-identified goals and objectives. Works closely with medical staff leadership and other staff to ensure appropriate medical staff involvement in clinical management efforts. Assists Director in ensuring the collection, analysis, evaluation, measurement, and reporting of clinical management operational data. Uses data to develop action plans as needed to benefit the department and/or institution outcomes.
5. Personnel Management - Applies organizational policy and procedures for all HR functions effectively directs and manages human resources. Creates an environment conducive to recruiting and retaining Role Model caliber team leaders and staff. Works with team leaders to ensure adequate staffing of appropriately trained and licensed personnel for clinical and administrative functions, while balancing financial and operational goals and regulatory requirements. Communicates with direct reports regularly to inform of pertinent HCS matters, as well as to identify opportunities to guide decision making, validate, coach, counsel, and evaluate staff performance.
6. Regulatory Compliance, Accreditation, & Quality - Ensures compliance with internal and external legal and regulatory standards, i.e., State of North Carolina, The Joint Commission for Disease Specific Care Certification (destination therapy/ VAD services), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, United Network for Sharing (UNOS), Southeastern Kidney Council and other accrediting/regulatory bodies, as applicable. Maintains updated knowledge of regulatory requirements for the transplant industry, as well as clinical and professional standards, and best practices. Develops and implements policy/procedure/standard changes based on integration of regulatory requirements, scientific evidence and current best practice analysis. Collaborates with Director in managing regulatory surveys and audits, and as indicated, develops, implements and monitors corrective action plans, which may include development of training and educational initiatives. Collaborates with department leaders, team members, quality analysts, Transplant Services Nurse Educator, the UNCH Director of Accreditation, and the physician directors of the organ specific teams to implement action plans, monitors progress and evaluates effectiveness and sustainability of improvements. Reports progress to Director Transplant Services. Collaborates with the Director in implementation of the Transplant QAPI plan.
7. Patient Care-Ensures that appropriate care and services are available to patients, clients and families 24/7/365. Ensures appropriate clinical assignment for caseload management. Supervises teams of professionals and paraprofessionals which may include nursing staff, social workers, specialty therapists and other health related staff. Role models excellence in nursing care to the specified patient population. Ensures that the nursing process is used to provide care. Facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration in patient/client care planning. 24-hour accountability for program management. Ensures competence for each role, identifies and addresses educational needs and learning experiences.


Qualifications

Education Requirements:
  • Master's degree in nursing, health administration or business-related field of study.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
  • RN license required.
Professional Experience Requirements:
  • Four (4) years of demonstrated experience in the field of quality, transplantation, and/or health care related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience in supervisory/management leadership role.
  • Minimum of four years of demonstrated experience in the field of cardiothoracic care, and/or transplantation is preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
  • Strong communication, program management, quality improvement, and leadership skills. Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships at all levels. Critical thinking and problem resolution skills required. Ability to develop, execute and evaluate action plans to meet departmental needs for clinical, educational and regulatory functions, leading teams to plan and execute initiatives.
