Job SummaryFinancial Eligibility Specialist perform a variety of complex functions related to processing patient financial assistance applications. Functions include process applications per the Patient Financial Assistance policy, screen patients for financial assistance and NC Medicaid eligibility, complete patient registration for new patients, answer patient questions related to the program, and respond to customer service requests through MY UNC Chart and inbound customer service call center.
Description Of Job Responsibilities
  • Receive financial assistance applications and corresponding financial documents. Scan, download, and index patient documents into the Epic financial assistance module received by mail, eFax, and My UNC Chart.
  • Create accurate patient registration records in Epic for unestablished patients that submit patient financial assistance applications for consideration prior to receiving care.
  • Process and determine appropriate outcomes of Patient Financial Assistance applications. Analyze and verify income documents to objectively determine applicable income and assets per policy. Provide timely communication to patients via mail and My UNC Chart on the status and outcome of the application.
  • Accurate and timely documentation of processing activities and patient communication in the Epic Financial Assistance Module.
  • Communicate effectively with patients by phone, My UNC Chart messaging, or in person to screen for Medicaid eligibility, obtain additional documents to determine an outcome, and answer questions about the program and other payment options.
  • Review cases for catastrophic charity care eligibility that are denied for traditional financial assistance program.
  • Work with multiple hospital departments, clinics, and community agencies to expedite financial assistance applications as needed.
  • Respond to customer relationship management requests received from patients who are inquiring about the financial assistance program and their application.

Licensure/Certification Requirements
  • None.
Professional Experience Requirements
  • Two (2) years of experience working in hospital/clinical services access or billing and collections insurance.
Preferred Experience
  • Two (2) years of experience in Hospital or Physician Revenue Cycle related roles (Authorization, Billing, Follow-Up, Patient Access, Call-Center, or Collections).
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent listening and organizational skills.
  • Advanced ability to analyze financial documentation and data.
  • Knowledge of insurance billing, collections and insurance terminology.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks. Work independently.
  • Excellent Customer Service skills.
  • Computer knowledge: MS Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Ability to understand and comply with policies and procedures.
