Summary:
In consultation and collaboration with the Infection Prevention Committee, establishes, documents, administers and evaluates plans for the prevention, surveillance and control of infections, and reporting of communicable disease cases. Incumbents are accountable to the North Carolina Board of Nursing for practicing nursing within the scope of the North Carolina Nursing Practice Act.
Responsibilities:
1. Establishes, documents, administers and evaluates plans for the surveillance and control of infections, sanitation and reporting of communicable disease cases, in collaboration with the Infection Control Committee, and under the general supervision of the Infection Control Chairman.
2. Effectively and substantially contributes to the establishment and implementation of a systematic method by which the current and future needs of the organization with respect to infection control can be assessed, documented, evaluated, authorized and prioritized, with reviews and revisions made at least annually, in collaboration with the Infection Control Committee.
3. Establishes and implements strategies to accomplish specified infection control programs/plans, participating in, or monitoring progress of those implemented, and taking action as needed to ensure that strategies remain viable, are pursued, and are accomplished within established time frames.
4. Ensures that each department has current and appropriate infection control policies and procedures specific to their circumstances and providing assistance as needed to ensure compliance.
5. Detects and records, on a systematic basis, infections present among patients; determining whether these infections were present on admission or nosocomial. Reviews laboratory and clinical data routinely to note positive cultures and/or nosocomial infections and confers with physician as indicated.
