UNC Health is Hiring a Surgical Technologist II Per Diem - 4th Floor Operating Room Near Chapel Hill, NC

Number of OR's: 5
Service Lines: Burn, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Adult dental, pulmonary, and GI.
Hours of operation: OR 7:30 am - 5:00 pm block schedule
This is a per diem, at will, position which requires the ability to work at least 12 hours every two weeks.
Summary:
Surgical Technologists (ST) are allied health professionals who assist in the preparation and care of surgical patients ranging from infancy to geriatrics under the general direction of a professional nurse. The ST possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a surgeon's performance of invasive, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures. The ST who has a dual function in the operating room and the ambulatory setting demonstrates competency in the care of surgical patients preoperatively and postoperatively in the ambulatory surgical clinic setting.
Responsibilities:
1. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-A (Advanced)1. Perform all the duties and responsibilities of Surgical
Technologist 1-B. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-B (Expert/Service Specific Lead Tech)1. Perform all the duties and responsibilities of Senior Surgical Technologist-A.
2. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-A (Advanced)2. Provide leadership at unit level to correct safety/clinical
quality deficiencies. Lead / implement changes at the unit level. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-B
(Expert/Service Specific Lead Tech)2. Provide leadership at the peri-operative surgical service unit level.
3. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-A (Advanced)3. Assist with the teaching of newly hired technologists and student Operating Room technologists. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-B (Expert/Service Specific Lead Tech). 3. Presents or teaches at the Surgical Service/ Hospital/ Health System level.
4. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-A (Advanced)4. Serve as a role model to new employees and other staff members. Coaches team to anticipate resources. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-B (Expert/Service Specific Lead Tech)4. Assists in the development of policies, procedures and protocols at the Surgical Unit level.
5. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-A (Advanced)5. Communicate effectively with patients, staff members and physicians. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-A (Advanced)5. Assists in efforts to improve resources by means of Kaizan projects through yellow/purple belt status
6. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-A (Advanced)6. Assume responsibility for self and ensures that the policies, procedures and safety practices of the Operating Room and Hospital are reinforced. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-A (Advanced)6. Has completed precepting course and actively assists in training new hires to surgery.
7. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-A (Advanced)7. Use critical thinking to anticipate the needs of the surgical team and perform other duties and responsibilities as required. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-A (Advanced)7. Provides leadership on Service by acting as a chief resource.
8. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-A (Advanced)8. Demonstrates advanced knowledge and practice of aseptic and surgical technique. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-A (Advanced)8. In collaboration with the Team Coordinator, performs checks, maintenance and control of surgical supplies, trays and equipment relating to their surgical service.
9. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-A (Advanced)9. Demonstrates advanced knowledge related to OR emergency situations. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-A (Advanced)9. Is familiar with and helps troubleshoot service specific specialty equipment
10. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-A (Advanced)10. Assists in the development of policies, procedures and protocols at the department level. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-B (Expert/Service Specific Lead Tech)10. Performs duties as a clinical assistant to the surgeon for all service specific cases, including assisting with room set up and turnaround from case-to-case. 11. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-A (Advanced)
11. Obtains Yellow Belt Status and helps to develop process to improve cost containment / decrease waste in room. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-B (Expert/Service Specific Lead Tech)11. Passes instruments, supplies and sutures to operative team members for any surgical specialty when needed.
12. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-A (Advanced)12. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-B (Expert/Service Specific Lead Tech)12. Checks daily schedule in advance for any special needs such as prior day set-up, or special supplies.
13. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-B (Expert/Service Specific Lead Tech). 13. Acts as a liaison with CPD regarding any issues with instrumentation. 14. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-B (Expert/Service Specific Lead Tech)
14. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-B (Expert/Service Specific Lead Tech) Continued creation, updating, and instrument reduction of service specific trays via Censitrac system.
15. SENIOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST-B (Expert/Service Specific Lead Tech)15. Works to help standardize service specific trays.

Education Requirements:
•Graduation from a Surgical Technology program.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
•National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) certification or National Center for
Competency Testing (NCCT) certification.
•BLS required.
Professional Experience Requirements:
•Senior Surgical Technologist-A: Three (3) years of clinical practice. Senior Surgical Technologist-B: Five (5) years of surgical technology practice. Candidates for Surgical Technologist 2-A and Surgical Technologist 2-B must meet requirements established by the Surgical Technologist Clinical Ladder Review Board.
