MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. BA or BS inHistotechnologyor related/appropriate field.
2. For qualified personnelwithoutHTL certification, applicant must successfully challenge the HTL registry within 12 months of hire.
3. Applicant is expected to have QIHC (Qualification in Immunohistochemistry) specialty or must successfully challenge the QIHC specialty within 18 months of acquiring the HTL certification
4. Licensed in the State of PA as a Laboratory Technician required within 90 days of employment.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties.Other duties may be assigned.
1. Performs in a timely manner, the basic and complicated procedures (e.g., but not limited to, specimen accessioning and processing, inventory, ordering, embedding, tissue cutting and staining, frozen section production, special stains for cellular structures, immunohistochemistry) designed to meet the needs of the department in support of the hospital's mission and goals.
2. Develops and follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to produce accurate reproducible results.
3. Completes assigned workload within established turnaround times by flexing organization of work according to ordering status (i.e., routine, STAT, ASAP). Efficiently uses time and resources.
4. Operates basic and advanced laboratory equipment/instruments (e.g., cryostats, tissue processors, microtomes, knife sharpeners, slidestainers, embedding centers, distillation system, pH meters, special stain units, IHC instrumentation) consistent with manufacturers' instruction manuals, and with laboratory SOP. Performs quality assurance, quality control, and required equipment maintenance and troubleshooting procedures, calibration and quality control on these instruments as designed to meet the needs of the department in support of the hospital's mission and goals.
5. Prepares and produces microscopic slides using a wide variety of tissue techniques (i.e., fixation, embedding, sectioning and standard and complex staining) in a timely manner to produce accurate reproducible results to meet the needs of patients as requested by the physicians, in support of the hospital's mission and goals
6. Participates, as required, in the training ofHistotechnologists, Histology Technicians and Laboratory Technicians.
7. Assists as needed in other areas of Pathology, including but not limited to the Gross Room and Morgue.
8. Must demonstrate, after receiving instruction and training, knowledge of the patient care requirements for all age groups as required by the laboratory standard operating procedures.
9. Recognizes errors, medical and technical problems and utilizes expertise to perform minor and major troubleshooting and appropriate and timely problem resolution. Provides input for development of quality assurance and quality control procedures.
10. Completes quality control records legibly and accurately (e.g., review of records, daily worksheets), according to SOP, and records all work (e.g., blocks cut, special stains, slides,immunoperoxidaseslides, frozen section slides,immunofluorescentslides, re-cut slides, autopsy and surgical slides, decals, conferences, teaching and research), according to SOP..
11. Promotes and contributes positively to the team work of the department by volunteering to assist co-workers, contributing ideas and problem-solving with co-workers, and displaying a caring and courteous attitude representing the hospital in a positive manner to all persons, 100% of the time..
12. Participates in planning and implementing change and maintaining and improving productivity through attendance and participation in tech meetings, projects and discussions with supervisor.
13. Maintains effective communication with laboratory sections, other hospital departments and patients/public, as necessary to assure dissemination of information and the identification/resolution of problems to support the hospital's mission of patient care.
14. Answers the telephone in a prompt and courteous manner identifying self and unit, 100% of the time, and oversees same by Histology Technicians and Laboratory Technicians as monitored by supervision.
15. Keeps current in all department communications (e.g., reading circulated material, minutes and procedures) incorporating new information into routine use.
16. Effectively communicates in a timely manner any unusual supply usage or critical supply levels to the supervisor to expedite ordering of required supplies for the continual service of patients 100% of the time.
17. Maintains the confidentiality of patient and unit information, without infraction, 100% of the time.
18. Participates in the educational endeavors of the institution to meet the current and future needs in support of the department's, hospital's and the university's goals and missions of teaching and research.
19. Maintains personal educational goals and continuing education attendance according to SOP.
20. Participates as required, in the education of medical students, residents, PA students, School of Medicine students, and technicians.
21. Retains specimens for teaching and research (i.e., unique cases or aberrations), according to SOP, as monitored by supervision.
22. Prepares specimens for departmental and interdepartmental conferences, as required by physicians according to SOP.
