S U MMARY:

This position is responsible for performing phlebotomy, specimen processing and tracking, and CLIA waived testing to obtain data for use in thediagnosis and treatment of disease.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

  • Reports to the Laboratory Manager for daily oversight and general processes.
  • Understand and comply with HIPAA and other regulations concerning client confidentiality.
  • Greet clients in a courteous and friendly manner and demonstrates excellent customer service skills. Customer service skills to include; listening closely to client, provide clear verbal communication, ability to empathize with client, and understanding of organizational protocol and guidelines.
  • Maintains a calm, professional manner at all times.
  • Works as an effective team member to provider quality client care.
  • Completes the processing of laboratory orders within the Electronic Health Record and on paper requisitions, where necessary, for all laboratory specimens collected at or processed through a UIHS laboratory.
  • Performs capillary and venipuncture specimen collection for laboratory testing.
  • Process blood, urine, microbiology and pathology specimens for diagnostic testing.
  • Track the shipment, completion and reporting into Electronic Health Record of all laboratory tests processed through a UIHS laboratory.
  • Performs CLIA – waived point of care testing on blood and urine specimens
  • Understands, performs, documents and troubleshoot quality control procedures. Troubleshoot basic problems encountered during normal laboratory workflow.
  • Performs routine cleaning, disinfection, and preventative maintenance on analyzers and other equipment as required.
  • Maintains an inventory of laboratory supplies.
  • Performs clerical tasks as needed.
  • Complies with UIHS Infection Prevention and Safety policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Maintains an organized and clean working environment.
  • Assist in development of laboratory policy, procedures and quality improvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with the UIHS mission, vision and guiding principles.

S UPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

E DUCATION/EXPERIENCE: E du c ational degrees must be from a US Department of Education accredited school

Level 1

  • High school diploma or equivalent; and must have:
  • Documentation of the completion of 40 hours of basic and advanced didactic (classroom) phlebotomy training from a phlebotomy program.
  • Documentation of the completion of 40 hours of phlebotomy practice that included the performance of at least 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures.
  • Must have pending California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I or II Certificate.

Level 2 (in addition to level 1)

  • Must have a minimum of one (1) year of full time (or equivalent) experience working in a medical facility performing phlebotomy.
  • Must be proficient in venipuncture and fingerstick procedures for blood collection and in handling and processing specimens for clinic diagnostic testing.
  • Completion and/ or maintenance of clinical cross training, or higher level certification (i.e. National or ASCP Phlebotomy Certification)

Level 3 (in addition to level 1 and 2)

  • Must have a minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in a medical facility performing phlebotomy.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to successfully train level 1-2 and phlebotomy interns.
  • May be met by having one (1) or more years’ experience as a Licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist or by assuming managerial responsibilities in the laboratory.

COMPUTER OPERATIONS:

• Basic personal computer skills including electronic mail, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.

• Experience with electronic health records (EHR) preferred.
