Primary Function of a Surveyor: Responsible for precise measurements to determine property boundaries. Provide data relevant to the shape and contour of ground surfaces for civil engineering and heavy construction.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day supervision of assigned survey field crew on quality and survey methodology, including training and mentoring of junior level employees.
  • Coordinate with internal project managers and outside clients to provide survey services.
  • Identify controls for projects and make the appropriate decisions regarding how to proceed with the survey.
  • Gather all necessary information needed to properly conduct the survey in the most time efficient manner and assign tasks to crew members.
  • Make calculations and maintain records essential to survey.
  • Ensure that assigned survey truck is properly maintained.
  • Maintain and inventory all assigned equipment.
  • Respond appropriately to all employee performance issues of assigned survey field crew.
  • Communicate with management to maximize efforts and man-hours.

Typical Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide surveying service which includes construction survey and layout on bridges, highways, foundations, and other related heavy civil projects.
  • Assists with survey computations and data collection including construction layout calculations, grade sheet computation, topographical/volume analysis and project datum conversion/transformation.
  • Verify the accuracy of survey data, including measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites.
  • Search legal records, survey records, and land titles to obtain information about property boundaries in areas to be surveyed.
  • Calculate heights, depths, relative positions, property lines, and other characteristics of terrain.
  • Prepare and maintain sketches, maps, reports, and legal descriptions of surveys to describe, certify, and assume liability for work performed.
  • Prepare or supervise preparation of all data, charts, plots, maps, records, and documents related to surveys.
  • Write descriptions of property boundary surveys for use in deeds, leases, or other legal documents.
  • Compute geodetic measurements and interpret survey data to determine positions, shapes, and elevations of geomorphic and topographic features.
  • Determine longitudes and latitudes of important features and boundaries in survey areas, using theodolites, transits, levels, and satellite-based global positioning systems (GPS).
  • Record the results of surveys including the shape, contour, location, elevation, and dimensions of land or land features.
  • Coordinate findings with the work of engineering and architectural personnel, clients, and others concerned with projects.
  • Establish fixed points for use in making maps, using geodetic and engineering instruments.
  • Adjust surveying instruments to maintain their accuracy.
  • Plan and conduct ground surveys designed to establish baselines, elevations, and other geodetic measurements.
  • Analyze survey objectives and specifications to prepare survey proposals or to direct others in survey proposal preparation.
  • Survey bodies of water to determine navigable channels and to secure data for construction of breakwaters, piers, and other marine structures.
  • Other duties as required.

Requirements:

  • Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in surveying or survey related field preferred.
  • Courses in mathematics and surveying.
  • 4-5 years of progressive survey experience and 2 years of Party Chief experience is preferred
  • SCDOT, NCDOT, GADOT Location and Surveys experience is preferred.
  • A good working knowledge of survey equipment such as Robotic Total Stations, data collectors and software, and GPS equipment
  • Ability to perform all aspects of data collection for topographic surveys, boundary surveys, planimetric surveys, and construction staking.
  • Thorough knowledge of total station, GPS, and data collection, with the ability to adapt to new equipment and technologies, such as terrestrial laser scanner.
  • Ability and knowledge to download field data, keep neat and accurate field notes, and maintain records of work and expenses
  • Good organizational skills, the ability to make prudent decisions in the field, resourceful and ambitious in problem solving, and reliability in being consistent and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to work outside in varying terrains and climates.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required.
