High School Assistant Principal (Tutorial House)

Role Summary
The position requires an educational leader, with a highly developed level of interpersonal empathy. The successful candidate will be able to navigate complex cultures, and demonstrate an international mind-set. He/she will bring a rich experience with national and international curricular frameworks. Personal attributes expected include self- motivation, the ability to think both strategically and tactically, and the flexibility to successfully work within a diverse and demanding school environment.
Reporting Relationship
The Assistant Principal reports to the High School School Principal.
In partnership with the Tutorial House (High School) Principal, the successful Assistant Principal candidate:
  • Understands, supports and can articulate the school’s Mission and Guiding Principles to students, faculty, families, staff, and the public outside the school
  • Promotes the Tutorial House’s educational philosophy, initiatives, and the development and sustainability of a collective and vibrant high school community
  • Demonstrates an understanding of what is required to develop supportive professional learning communities
  • Encourages and designs opportunities for collaborative decision-making among faculty, students, families, and staff
  • Encourages and creates opportunities for healthy critique
  • Engages enthusiastically with and responds positively to the needs of students, faculty, families, and staff
  • Supports the principal in all his/her responsibilities and for the on-going improvement of the school in optimizing the learning of all students
  • Is responsible for the smooth running of the school in the Principal’s absence, including daily communication to teachers
  • Supports the principal to place students in appropriate grades, homerooms, classes and other programs, and in such support systems as determined appropriate by teachers, and following up on the progress of those students who have been referred
  • Helps coordinate security and safety procedures
  • Supports the Principal to direct, supervise, and evaluate and appraise faculty and staff in accordance with the standards, policies and practices of the School
  • Helps enrollment by meeting with prospective parents, reviewing student applications, and helping make student admissions and placement recommendations to the Director of Admissions
Duties and Responsibilities
Student Life
  • Oversees the high school attendance database, coordinates all attendance issues
  • Works closely with the Administrative Assistant responsible for attendance to determine patterns of attendance and all attendance issues
  • Communicates with parents regarding violations of the attendance policy and maintains the high school’s attendance standards
  • Oversees all student handbook and policy violations, including issues related to academic integrity
  • Works closely with students and faculty to monitor and shape the code of behavior, and review the Student Handbook on a yearly basis
  • Determines consequences based on the code of conduct and high school policies
  • Meets with students, teachers, and parents for students with repeated or more serious behavioral concerns
  • Leads communication with teachers, students and parents regarding discipline
  • Provides assistance during evacuation or lockdown procedures
Student Support and Success
  • Works with the counselors, registrar and IB Office to help manage the placement of students in the appropriate classes/sections/levels, and the requests for class changes
  • Meets with advisors and counselors who need additional support regarding students of concern socially or behaviorally
  • Gathers and analyze data relating to student academic achievement (IB results, MAP results, Report Cards, etc)
  • Meets weekly with the referral team to oversee support for all TH students with academic and/or social emotional concerns
  • Coordinates various school events that includes but is not limited to the following: new student orientation, parent/teacher conferences, information evenings
  • Works closely to assist the college office in planning commencement
  • Plans appropriate educational activities/assemblies for High School students
  • Works with the Student Council
Faculty and Staff
  • Creates and manages the annual schedule for the Tutorial House
  • Analyzes needs for schedule changes for following year driven by curricula, staffing, space needs of the TH
  • Supervision, support, guidance, evaluation and appraisal of Tut House faculty and staff
  • First point of contact for teachers regarding difficulties with students, faculty, parents, general concerns
  • Assists the TH Principal in the recruiting process
Curriculum and Advisory
  • Works closely with the Student Success and Support Team, the Advisors and the Grade-Level Team Leaders to create and manage an efficient and age-appropriate advisory program for TH students
  • Works closely with the TH Principal, Team Leaders and IB Office to oversee changes and implementation of curriculum in the TH
  • Assists in presentation of curriculum information to parents (curriculum evenings, parent coffees,1-1 meetings with parents)
  • The Assistant Principal may perform additional duties as assigned by the Tutorial House Principal when needed
Education, Work Experience, and Skills Requirements
  • M.A. or M.Ed. in administration and supervision, curriculum and instruction, education, or related field
  • Experience in a leadership role, preferably in an international, multilingual setting
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, communication skills
  • Teaching experience in an upper school, preferably in an international, multilingual setting
  • Knowledge of current research in education, administration and supervision,
  • Experience evaluating and appraising teachers in an international school
  • Excellent conflict-resolution skills
Annual Salary: $150,000
