Junior School Visual Arts Teacher
Union Position - Covered by Collective Bargaining Agreement

Position Purpose:
The United Nations International School (UNIS) is seeking an experienced and dedicated full-time Visual Arts Teacher for our Junior School. The Ideal candidate will have a strong background in visual arts education and extensive teaching experience with young students. They should be adept at employing a range of instructional strategies and be committed to supporting students’ emotional and social development. The role required a kind, responsible and compassionate approach, as well as collaboration with parents and faculty to enhance students’ learning experiences. UNIS teachers are expected to be open, reflective, team-oriented, and passionate about fostering students’ growth and learning.
Reporting Relationship:
This role reports to the Director of Arts and the Junior School Principal
Duties and Responsibilities
General Duties and Responsibilities
  • Primary Responsibility includes teaching visual arts class to students from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 4 in the Junior School.
  • Supervising students during non-instructional time, attending curriculum and grade level meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned and in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement (e.g. supervision duties, office hours, advising, etc)
  • Incorporate the UNIS Mission into your planning and interactions with the entire school community
  • Manage classrooms effectively and follow school procedures
  • Collaborate with school leaders and administrators to enforce school policies
  • Educate a diverse and expanding student population, embracing cultural differences
  • Adopt new models for creating inclusive classroom
Working with Students
  • Design and deliver high quality, student-centered learning experiences that are engaging, inquiry-based, aligned to the UNIS curriculum and standards, and differentiated to meet the needs of the students
  • Deliver instruction in subject/grade level needed by the school, consistent with the teacher’s expertise
  • Implement strategies in the classroom to support age-appropriate students’ behavioral needs
  • Work collaboratively with students to establish and enforce a set of rules for the classroom
  • Help students to set goals and to assess and monitor their performance. Work one-on-one with students to improve performance and address behavioral issues
  • Design and deliver standards-based assessments that support student learning, and that are aligned with UNIS assessment philosophy and practices
  • Provide detailed feedback to students about their academic performance, along with strategies for improvement when necessary
  • If required, help organize and deliver our advisory program to students
  • Help supervise common areas between classes
  • Chaperone school events
  • Help implement the school rules included in the UNIS Parent and Student Handbook
  • Seek feedback from students about the courses being taught, if required
Working With Faculty
  • Collaborate with colleagues to plan and develop effective learning experiences
  • Review common assessments and standardized testing results
Working With Parents
  • Collaborate with parents to support the student's academic, social, and emotional needs
  • Regularly communicate and report student academic, social, and emotional performance
  • Respond to student/parent communication in a professional and timely manner
  • Attend Back-to-School Nights / Curriculum Nights to present program to families at the beginning of the school year
  • Attend Parent/Teacher Conferences
Collaboration on Special Arts Events and Promotion of Art
  • Plan and participate in special arts events and exhibitions within the school.
  • Promote the importance and appreciation of art within the school community through events, projects, and displays.
Regular Meetings
  • Attend weekly department meetings
  • Attend weekly faculty meetings
  • Attend other occasional meetings as required
Specific Qualifications and Skills
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree required (Master Degree preferred)
  • Extensive experience in Visual Arts
  • Experience in a K-12 educational environment
  • Excellent written and Oral Communication Skills
  • Superior interpersonal skills, patience, and sense of humor required. The classroom culture must be a comfortable and engaging place for students, parents, faculty, and administrators
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to navigate a variety of settings as needed.
Base Annual Salary in the range of $66,093 to $109,243.
